Systemic sclerosis is a highly morbid, complex autoimmune disease that is variable both in its phenotype and the attendant mortality driven by such manifestations. This review article synthesizes mortality data from the best available meta-analyses, subgroup analyses of single cohorts, and subjective comparisons of individual cohort studies, which in ...

The old German protest song, "Die Gedanken sind frei" (thoughts are free) says that thoughts are so powerful they can break "Mauern entzwei" (break the prison walls in two). Official forecasts of mortality made by the U.S. Office of the Actuary throughout this century have consistently underestimated observed mortality declines. This is due, in part, to their reliance on the static extrapolation of past trends, an atheoretical statistical method that pays scant attention to the behavioral, medical, and social factors ...

Systematic virologic surveillance in Houston over the past seven years has revealed that influenza virus infections have been epidemic during each respiratory disease season. The peak of the occurrence of acute respiratory illnesses that caused patients to seek medical care always coincided with the peak of influenza virus activity.

I was very interested by Dr. Wegman's article on vital statistics (Pediatrics 58:793, December 1976). Nevertheless, I would like to share some reservations that I have concerning the inference he made regarding the decrease in neonatal mortality: "The steady decline in the neonatal mortality rate, almost as rapid as that of the post-neonatal rate, does
