Proceedings of the 10th ACM SIGPLAN/SIGOPS international conference on Virtual execution environments, 2013
Data center servers are typically overprovisioned, leaving spare memory and CPU capacity idle to handle unpredictable workload bursts by the virtual machines running on them. While this allows for fast hotspot mitigation, it is also wasteful. Unfortunately, making use of spare capacity without impacting active applications is particularly difficult for

Mortars and plasters—how to characterise hydraulic mortars
Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences, 2021Mortars are heterogeneous building materials whose raw materials, manufacturing processes and application conditions have evolved continuously throughout history. The fact that apparently small changes in the components or dosages of mortars can affect their overall performance in the masonry makes the study of historic mortars a complex task that ...

Mortars are used as one method for ejecting parachutes into the airstream to decelerate spacecraft and aircraft pilot escape modules and to effect spin recovery of the aircraft. An approach to design of mortars in the class that can accommodate parachutes in the 20- to 55-foot-diameter size is presented.
