Predicting body mass in Ruminantia using postcranial measurements

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 284, Issue 10, October 2023., 2023
Regressions are generated to predict body mass in ruminant artiodactyls using 56 postcranial measurements. Bivariate and multiple regressions involving measurements of the humerus, radioulna, and calcaneus are considered optimal for predicting mass in Ruminantia.

A review of the ecological and socioeconomic characteristics of trophy hunting across Asia

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 26, Issue 5, Page 609-624, October 2023., 2023
Across Asia, established trophy hunting programmes exist in at least 11 countries and target at least 30 species and one hybrid. Trophy hunting in these countries varies markedly in areas, offtakes and species. National legislation typically mandates a proportion of trophy hunting revenue to accrue locally.

Immunohistological study of the unexplored vomeronasal organ of an endangered mammal, the dama gazelle (Nanger dama)

open access: yesMicroscopy Research and Technique, Volume 86, Issue 9, Page 1206-1233, September 2023., 2023
Exploring the Vomeronasal Organ in the Dama Gazelle, an Endangered Mammal Abstract Dama gazelle is a threatened and rarely studied species found primarily in northern Africa. Human pressure has depleted the dama gazelle population from tens of thousands to a few hundred individuals.

Meta‐analysis of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class IIA reveals polymorphism and positive selection in many vertebrate species

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 31, Issue 24, Page 6390-6406, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Pathogen‐mediated selection and sexual selection are important drivers of evolution. Both processes are known to target genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), a gene family encoding cell‐surface proteins that display pathogen peptides to the immune system.

Aligning conservation and public health goals to tackle unsustainable trade of mammals

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 4, Issue 11, November 2022., 2022
Abstract Unsustainable wildlife trade is a major driver of biodiversity loss and an important public health threat. Yet, effective wildlife trade regulation is currently at odds with food security and economic incentives provided by this global, multibillion‐dollar industry.

Recommender systems for fossil community distribution modelling

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 8, Page 1690-1706, August 2022., 2022
Abstract We propose to leverage recommender systems from machine learning to build large‐scale community distribution models for the mammalian fossil record. Recommender systems are behind most online life today, from shopping to news personalisation, online dating, or the selection of study programmes or fastest routes.

Life‐history traits and fitness of plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) in alpine meadow ecosystem

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 1, January 2022., 2022
Plateau pika is an endemic mammal living at the alpine meadow ecosystem in Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. We studied plateau pika life history by mark–recapturing plateau pika in the field and by tracking and recording a reproductive population in half‐captivity.

Assessment of the control measures of the category A diseases of Animal Health Law: Rift Valley Fever

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 20, Issue 1, January 2022., 2022
Abstract EFSA received a mandate from the European Commission to assess the effectiveness of some of the control measures against diseases included in the Category A list according to Regulation (EU) 2016/429 on transmissible animal diseases ('Animal Health Law’).

Ecological correlates of extinction risk in Chinese terrestrial mammals

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 27, Issue 7, Page 1294-1307, July 2021., 2021
Abstract Aim China is among the countries with highest mammal diversity in the world, but a considerable proportion of Chinese terrestrial mammal species is currently at risk of extinction. For effective conservation, it would be fundamental to answer the following questions: (1) Is extinction risk randomly distributed among families in Chinese ...

Comparative Microbiome Analysis Reveals the Ecological Relationships Between Rumen Methanogens, Acetogens, and Their Hosts

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Ruminant methane, which is generated by methanogens through the consumption of hydrogen and supports the normal function of the rumen ecosystem, is a major source of greenhouse gases.
