Real-World Repetition Estimation by Div, Grad and Curl [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We consider the problem of estimating repetition in video, such as performing push-ups, cutting a melon or playing violin. Existing work shows good results under the assumption of static and stationary periodicity.

Multisensory contributions to the perception of motion

open access: yesNeuropsychologia, 2003
The ability to process motion is crucial for coherent perception and action. While the majority of studies have focused on the unimodal factors that influence motion perception (see, for example, the other chapters in this Special Issue), some researchers have also investigated the extent to which information presented in one sensory modality can ...

A Case‐Based Reasoning Approach to Model Manufacturing Constraints for Impact Extrusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid modeling approach is presented that combines constraint‐based process modeling and case‐based reasoning. The model formalizes manufacturing constraints and integrates simulation data to model complex manufacturing processes. The approach supports manufacturability analysis during product design through an adaptive modeling environment.

It’s not all in your feet: Improving penalty kick performance with human-avatar interaction and machine learning

open access: yesThe Innovation
Penalty kicks are increasingly decisive in major international football competitions. Yet, over 30% of shootout kicks are missed. The outcome of the kick often relies on the ability of the penalty taker to exploit anticipatory movements of the goalkeeper

Towards Computational Models and Applications of Insect Visual Systems for Motion Perception: A Review [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Motion perception is a critical capability determining a variety of aspects of insects' life, including avoiding predators, foraging and so forth. A good number of motion detectors have been identified in the insects' visual pathways. Computational modelling of these motion detectors has not only been providing effective solutions to artificial ...

Concurrent investigation of global motion and form processing in amblyopia: an equivalent noise approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
PURPOSE: Directly comparing the motion and form processing in neurologic disorders has remained difficult due to the limitations in the experimental stimulus.

Mechanical Metamaterials for Bioengineering: In Vitro, Wearable, and Implantable Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mechanical metamaterials with engineered architectures exhibit properties that differ from and greatly surpass those of their constituent bulk materials. This review summarizes the applications of mechanical metamaterials in bioengineering, focusing on advances in the last 5 years.

Multisensory Motion Perception in 3\u20134 Month-Old Infants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Human infants begin very early in life to take advantage of multisensory information by extracting the invariant amodal information that is conveyed redundantly by multiple senses.

Effects of Creep in Titanium at Room Temperature during Tensile and Profilometry‐Based Indentation Plastometry Testing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article concerns room temperature tensile testing, with a range of (nominal) strain rates, of three titanium alloys. Stress–strain curves are analyzed to obtain creep characteristics. Profilometry‐based indentation plastometry testing is also covered, using different penetration velocities, and correlations established with tensile data.

Event segmentation and biological motion perception in watching dance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We used a combination of behavioral, computational vision and fMRI methods to examine human brain activity while viewing a 386 s video of a solo Bharatanatyam dance. A computational analysis provided us with a Motion Index (MI) quantifying the silhouette
