On Primitives in Motor Control

Motor Control, 2020
The concept of primitives has been used in motor control both as a theoretical construct and as a means of describing the results of experimental studies involving multiple moving elements. This concept is close to Bernstein’s notion of engrams and level of synergies.

Motor primitives in vertebrates and invertebrates

Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2005
In recent years different lines of evidence have led to the idea that motor actions and movements in both vertebrates and invertebrates are composed of elementary building blocks. The entire motor repertoire can be spanned by applying a well-defined set of operations and transformations to these primitives and by combining them in many different ways ...

Learning table tennis with a Mixture of Motor Primitives

2010 10th IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots, 2010
Table tennis is a sufficiently complex motor task for studying complete skill learning systems. It consists of several elementary motions and requires fast movements, accurate control, and online adaptation. To represent the elementary movements needed for robot table tennis, we rely on dynamic systems motor primitives (DMP).

Tast frames: Primitives for sensory-motor coordination

Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing, 1986
Abstract In order to navigate and manipulate objects in the environment, a robot must have a model of itself, its surround, and how it interacts with the surround. The key issues are: what form should these models take; how are they constructed from sensory input; and how are they used? We argue that an extension of object-centered coordinate frames,

Motor Primitives and Rehabilitation

2007 Virtual Rehabilitation, 2007
To generate movements the CNS must handle the large number of degrees of freedom of the musculo-skeletal apparatus. Our results show the CNS solves this problem with an architecture based on the utilization of discrete building blocks to construct a variety of movements.

Grasping with Vision Descriptors and Motor Primitives

2011
Grasping is one of the most important abilities needed for future service robots. Given the task of picking up an object from betweem clutter, traditional robotics approaches would determine a suitable grasping point and then use a movement planner to reach the goal.

Motor Functions: Associated Primitive Reflex Profiles

Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 1982
SUMMARYThe results of reflex/motor activity interactions in 177 normal infants are evaluated. The asymmetrical tonic neck reflex, tonic labyrinthine reflex‐supine, and Moro reflexes were assessed for each child at birth and at intervals up to 12 months.

Policy Search for Motor Primitives.

Künstliche Intell., 2009
Many motor skills in humanoid robotics can be learned using parametrized motor primitives from demonstrations. However, most interesting motor learning problems require self-improvement often beyond the reach of current reinforcement learning methods due to the high dimensionality of the state-space.

Primitive Reflexes and Early Motor Development

Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, 1997
To investigate the relationship between primitive reflexes and typical early motor development, 156 full-term infants with normal 18-month developmental outcomes were assessed using a modified Primitive Reflex Profile (PRP) and the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) at 6 weeks and 3 and 5 months.

Action recognition and understanding through motor primitives

Advanced Robotics, 2007
In robotics, recognition of human activity has been used extensively for robot task learning through imitation and demonstration. However, there has not been much work performed on modeling and recognition of activities that involve object manipulation and grasping. In this work, we deal with single arm/hand actions which are very similar to each other
