The effectiveness of foams in bicycle and motorcycle helmets

Accident Analysis & Prevention, 1991
The optimisation of the foam used for shock absorption in bicycle and motorcycle helmets is considered. It is shown that for the former, the ideal foam yield stress for impact with a rigid protruding object is higher than that for impact with a deformable flat object. Therefore, the design must be a compromise.

Helmet usage in motorcycle-related neurotrauma

British Journal of Neurosurgery, 2009
Motorcycles provide important means of transportation for humans and goods especially in developing economies. The authors observe that Murphy and his colleagues aptly illustrate the burden of motorcycles on national healthcare systems but did not present clear data relating to the effect of helmet use in reducing the severity of head injury by ...

Medical Consequences of Motorcycle Helmet Nonusage

The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, 1984
Thirty-five states repealed or altered mandatory motorcycle helmet legislation since May 1976. In-depth evaluation of the impact of the change has been reported from four states. The results reveal significant decreases in helmet usage and significant increases in head injury and deaths.

VIRTUAL TESTING OF COMPOSITE MOTORCYCLE HELMETS

International Journal of Modern Physics B, 2008
A study about the response of motorcycle helmets to impacts is described in this paper and possible ways to improve current designs are discussed. Firstly, a simple unidimensional model of helmet is analyzed and the main parameters that affect its response are pointed out.

Helmet use and motorcycle fatalities in Taiwan

Accident Analysis & Prevention, 2005
Motorcycle deaths accounted for more than half of total traffic fatalities in Taiwan in 2002. This study uses the police-reported crash data from Taiwan between 1999 and 2001 to estimate the effectiveness of helmets, simultaneously taking into account of sample selection bias.

Spectral filtering characteristics of a motorcycle helmet

Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics, 2011
Noise transmission characteristics of a motorcycle helmet have been analyzed using a combination of insertion loss measurements and loudness matching in a behavioral study. Results demonstrate the action of the motorcycle helmet as a spectral filter. The insertion loss measurements confirm previously published data showing attenuation in the frequency ...

How Safe Is Your Motorcycle Helmet?

Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2014
Motorcycle crash helmets do not totally prevent head and facial trauma. The aim of this study was to investigate if protection offered by helmets differs according to helmet type.In this retrospective cohort study, outpatient records of motorcyclists were analyzed for the Facial Injury Severity Scale (FISS), traumatic brain injury (TBI), facial ...

Motorcycle-Helmet Laws and Public Health

New England Journal of Medicine, 2017
Motorcyclists are much more likely to die or be injured in a crash than passenger-car occupants. Helmet use has been shown to reduce the severity of injuries from motorcycle crashes and increase the likelihood of survival, but most states don’t have laws requiring it.

The Case for Universal Motorcycle Helmet Laws

Southern Medical Journal, 2010
This editorial is written to accompany an article that reported that the repeal of the universal helmet law in Texas in 1997 has had a significant adverse effect on motorcyclist fatalities in Texas. In this commentary, the author first briefly outlines the recent trend in motorcyclist fatalities across the United States, noting that the national ...

Textile applications for motorcycle helmets

2021
This research has investigated the novel application of innovative fabrics in the design of an interlayer between the scalp and the helmet lining of a motorcycle helmet to control the temperature inside the helmet. Fibre microstructure configurations and fibre treatments have been examined for their ability to assist in the dissipation of heat from the
