Neuroendocrine control of moulting cycle in mealworms: Bioassay of moulting hormone

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1976
Abstract The moulting hormone content of mealworm homogenates was determined by injection of partially purified fractions into abdomens of mature larvae of Musca domestica . In mealworms with a 12-day interval between ecdyses, moulting hormone was at a maximum at 8 days.

Moulting of parasitic nematodes

International Journal for Parasitology, 1987
Abstract Nematodes are usually divided into two major groups, the Adenophora which are common in water and the Secernentea largely from soil. Most research on moulting has been done with the Secernentea, which include the majority of the parasitic forms.

Moulting cycles

Mammal Review, 1972
SummaryMoulting in mammals is a cyclic phenomenon which often occurs in a wave–like pattern. The moult cycle depends upon an inherent rhythm of activity in the hair follicles, which may be modified by systemic factors. In laboratory rodents a number of hormones affect the timing of the moult, as well as affecting the amount of hair produced and the ...

Some properties of silkmoth moulting gel and moulting fluid

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1970
Abstract The moulting fluid of silkmoths contains numerous proteins, mostly in the range of 20,000 to 70,000 molecular weight. Only a fraction of these proteins have known enzymatic activity. Approximately ten bands are resolved by polyacrylamide disk gel electrophoresis.

Thermoenergetics of pre-moulting and moulting kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae): they're laughing

Journal of Comparative Physiology B, 2003
We examined the effect of temperature on resting metabolic rate in seven field-captured laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae) during late winter and early spring. Basal metabolic rate averaged 201+/-3.4 ml O(2) h(-1) (0.603 ml O(2) g(-1) h(-1)). Overall thermal conductance (K(o)) declined with ambient temperature ( T(a)) and averaged 0.026 ml O(2)

Moult and plumage

Ringing & Migration, 2009
Moult is one of the three main energy‐demanding events in the yearly cycles of birds, and in most species occurs at a different time from breeding and migration. The sequence in which these events occur varies according to the ecological circumstances in which particular populations live, and in general moult is more variable in timing than other ...
