Microbiota diversity and differences in the respiratory tract of children with pneumonia

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, EarlyView.
Differences in microbial communities in the upper and lower respiratory tract in patients with pneumonia were investigated in this study by sequencing the 16S rRNA genes in pharyngeal swabs and alveolar lavage fluid. Forty‐three subjects were enrolled in the study, and one upper and one lower respiratory tract sample were collected from each subject ...

Interdisciplinary approaches to enhance sensory properties and consumer acceptance in pulse crops

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Enhancing the flavor profile of pulse crops such as chickpea, dry pea, and lentil is essential for increasing human acceptance of plant‐based diets. Despite their nutritional value, undesirable sensory attributes of pulses, including off‐flavors and bitterness, reduce consumer acceptance.

Insights Into Retronasal Sensation of Sweeteners Within Aerosol Particles Via Scalp Electroencephalogram

open access: yesSensory Neuroscience, EarlyView.
Sweeteners in aerosol form trigger retro‐nasal sensations that modulate early (P1) and late (P3) brain responses. EEG recordings reveal that sucrose and rebaudioside A elicit distinct ERP components only when retro‐nasal airflow is permitted, supporting aerosol‐based taste–smell integration and suggesting involvement of both top‐down and bottom‐up ...

Multi‐Functional Polydopamine‐Mucin Hollow Particles Provide Tunable Shell Permeability, ROS Scavenging, Tissue Adhesion, and Lubricity for Biomedical Applications

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
This study presents a facile method to fabricate hollow, multifunctional polydopamine (PDA)‐mucin microparticles. The permeability of the particle shells can be tuned by adding ionic or molecular “locks”, so that cargo molecules can be trapped within the shells with high encapsulation efficiency.

Noninvasive and Sensitive Biosensor for the Detection of Oral Cancer Prognostic Biomarkers

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Oral cancer is often diagnosed with the presence of metastasis, which implies a significantly poor prognosis. Saliva‐based liquid biopsy using electrochemical biosensors targeting CSTB, LTA4H, and COL6A1 biomarkers offers high sensitivity and selectivity.
