Investigation on the equivalent circuit for MOV

IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exhibition, 2003
The current response for MOV under the step voltages with different amplitudes has been investigated in this paper. A more practical equivalent circuit in the whole current region and the method to determine its corresponding circuit parameters is proposed according to the phenomena that the MOV has polarized current in a low current region and has ...

Application of MOVs in the distribution environment

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1994
The introduction of the MOV (metal oxide varistor) arrester for distribution systems followed the successful use of these arresters in the transmission area. Higher than expected failure rates for these arresters have brought up the question of whether most of these failures are caused by system conditions related to poor application methods or by poor

A method for the lifetime prediction of MOV

Proceedings of 2001 International Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials (ISEIM 2001). 2001 Asian Conference on Electrical Insulating Diagnosis (ACEID 2001). 33rd Symposium on Electrical and Electronic Insulating Materials and Applications in System, 2002
On the basis of a number of the multi-stress aging experimental analysis, by means of the characteristic points of the resistive leakage current-time curves and by using the similarity condition, a method for the lifetime prediction of MOV is presented in this paper.

New MOV Failure Mode Identification Invention

IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, 2007
This patent pending technology relates, generally, to surge protection devices. More particularly, it relates to a surge protection device that relies on the capacitive properties of the metal oxide varistor (MOV) as a part of an impedance network for failure identification.

A Linearized Model for MOV-Protected Series Capacitors

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1987
A method for modeling series capacitors protected by metal oxide varistors has been developed for calculations requiring linear impedances. Fault and stability programs can now be adapted to perform the previously infeasible calculations on circuits containing these non-linear protection devices.
