Metabolic Design Patterns for a Regenerative Architecture

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 10, October 2026.
This simplified diagram illustrates the three core Metabolic Design Patterns: Toilet as Hearth, Kitchen Garden, and Greywater Wetland, which form the foundation of a regenerative domestic infrastructure. Each pattern integrates bioelectrical systems (BES) and bioreactors into recognisable domestic programmes, transforming waste streams into resources ...

Hydrogen Permeability of Tubular Polymer Membranes for Biological Methanation Membrane Reactors

open access: yesJournal of Applied Polymer Science, Volume 143, Issue 35, September 15, 2026.
A reproducible method for permeability measurements of tubular polymer membranes is developed and combined with a comprehensive review of hydrogen permeability data. Based on this analysis, a suitable tubular polymer membrane is identified for application in biological methanation within membrane reactors.

The impact of influent total ammonium nitrogen concentration on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria inhibition in moving bed biofilm reactor

open access: yes, 2014
The application of nitrification–denitrification over nitrite (nitritation–denitritation) with municipal (i.e. diluted and cold (or low-temperature)) wastewater can substantially improve the energy balance of municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Evaluation of biofilm carrier colonisation in a deammonification moving-bed biofilm reactor

open access: yesEnvironmental Technology
This study focused on the evaluation and characterisation of carrier colonisation of a deammonification moving-bed biofilm reactor (dMBBR) at a low carrier-inoculation ratio (≤5%v/v), applying multiple methodologies. The dMBBR (5 L working volume) was filled with Aqwise carriers (50%v/v filling ratio) and fed with synthetic feedstock.

A review on the effect of biofilm thickness in moving bed bioreactor for the nitrogen compounds removal

open access: yesDesalination and Water Treatment
Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) has picked up consideration since of its compactness, simplicity, stability that reinforces circularity in the wastewater treatment industry in line with the principles of the circular economy.

Two‐Stage Anaerobic Digestion of Sugarcane Vinasse: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Trends and Gaps

open access: yesEnvironmental Quality Management, Volume 36, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane vinasse, a by‐product of bioethanol production, poses a significant environmental challenge due to its high organic load and the large volumes generated. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been widely explored as an alternative treatment, particularly in two‐stage configurations that can enhance methane recovery.

Reliability‐Based Evaluation of the Robustness of Constructed Wetlands for Sustainable Sanitation: Implications for Design and Operation

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 98, Issue 9, September 2026.
Reliability analysis of 34 constructed wetlands showed wide operating margins for organic matter and suspended solids, but less frequent sustained compliance for nitrogen and phosphorus. Robustness should therefore be assessed using system‐ and parameter‐specific reliability, together with removal efficiency and final effluent concentration.

Influence of hydrodynamics and nutrients on biofilm structure

open access: yes, 1998
Hydrodynamic conditions control two interlinked parameters; mass transfer and drag, and will, therefore, significantly influence many of the processes involved in biofilm development. The goal of this research was to determine the effect of flow velocity

Sulfur-Mediated Autotrophic Denitrification for Sustainable Water Treatment: A Review on Principles, Materials, Progress, and Practices

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Sulfur-mediated autotrophic denitrification (SAD) is an innovative and sustainable water treatment technology, which operates without an external carbon source and achieves lower sludge production.

The dynamics and stablilty of fixed bed catalytic reactors [PDF]

open access: yes, 1973
Various aspects of the behaviour of fixed bed reactors supporting highly exothermic reactions, relevant to stable -optimal design and control, have been studied using detailed mathematical models.
