Examining Causes of Racial Disparities in General Surgical Mortality: Hospital Quality Versus Patient Risk. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Racial disparities in general surgical outcomes are known to exist but not well understood. OBJECTIVES: To determine if black-white disparities in general surgery mortality for Medicare patients are attributable to poorer health status among ...

Dynamics and seismic performance of asymmetric rocking bridges [PDF]
The governing equations of motion for bridges with rocking piers of unequal height and unequal span lengths are derived accounting for the effect of end joint gaps and the abutment-backfill system.

Greater honeyguide birds are known to lead people to bees' nests, and it has been repeatedly stated that honeyguides similarly guide honey badgers. Here, we review the evidence that honey badgers and honeyguides cooperate to access bees' nests, drawing from the published literature, from our own observations whilst studying both species, and by ...

Comparison of the arm‐lowering performance between Gorilla and Homo through musculoskeletal modeling
Arm‐lowering muscles like teres major have an enhanced moment arm (perpendicular distance between joint center and force line of action) in Gorilla compared to Homo due to a more distal muscle insertion along the humerus. The moment arm is further enhanced by a cranial glenoid, which changes the position of the joint center relative to the muscle ...

Ontogenetic changes to metacarpal trabecular bone structure in mountain and western lowland gorillas
This study investigates the ontogenetic changes in trabecular structure in western lowland and mountain gorilla third metacarpals and how these changes may reflect locomotor behaviour throughout development. We found that metacarpal trabecular structure reflects a higher frequency of grasping in early ontogeny and a shift to predominant knuckle walking

A systematic investigation of the crystallization of 2,7‐dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2‐b] [1]benzothiophene (C8‐BTBT) during a meniscus‐guided coating is presented. Via computational modelling of the fluid dynamics and the crystallization, three casting‐speed‐dependent morphological subregimes are identified: I) isotropic domain‐like; II) unidirectional ...

Integrating Blue Energy in Maritime Spatial Planning of Mediterranean Regions [PDF]
Blue Energy (BE) is expected to play a strategic role in the energy transition of Europe, particularly toward the 2050 horizon. It refers to a set of Marine Energy Sources (MES), including offshore wind, waves, tides, marine currents, sea thermal energy,

Temperature‐Responsive Nanoparticles Enable Specific Binding of Apolipoproteins from Human Plasma
Apolipoproteins are proteins in human plasma which provide stealth effect to nanoparticles, resulting in less unspecific cellular uptake and prolonged blood circulation time. Herein, the specific binding of apolipoproteins around temperature‐responsive nanoparticles when incubating the nanoparticles in human plasma is observed.
