Ileocolonic mucormycosis in adult immunocompromised patients: A surgeon's perspective [PDF]

We report three cases of ileocolic mucormycosis in adult immunocompromised patients presenting as acute abdomen. All patients underwent laparotomy but two of them died from multiorgan failure before the diagnoses were confirmed.

Thirty four patients with mucormycosis in 10 hospitals of St. Petersburg were observed in 2004-2013. The most frequent underlying diseases of mucormycosis were acute leukoses (64%). In 100% of the patients mucormycosis developed as a nosocomial infection.

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation can improve survival in relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia; however, impaired pulmonary function is detrimental for surviving the transplantation process.
