A Comparison of Mud Pulse and E-Line Telemetry in Alaska CTD Operations
SPE/ICoTA Coiled Tubing Conference and Exhibition, 2002Abstract Coiled Tubing Drilling (CTD) has been used on the North Slope of Alaska to drill in excess of 250 re-entry sidetrack wells since 1994. Most of the through tubing coil sidetracks were drilled with a conventional bottom hole assembly (BHA) consisting of a mud pulse MWD tool, and a mechanical/hydraulic orienter.

Continuous wavelet transformation: A novel approach for better detection of mud pulses
Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2013Abstract Mud pulse telemetry systems use coded pressure pulses (carriers) for transmitting measured downhole information (directional and geological information) to the surface in real time. The detection of the pulses and the extraction of their characteristics (start, duration and frequency) in a noisy pressure signal measured in the mud column at ...

Applying Digital Data-Encoding Techniques to Mud Pulse Telemetry
Petroleum Computer Conference, 1990ABSTRACT More and more downhole devices are requiring two-way communication with the surface to telemeter data and device status and/or receive telemetered instructions which effect the operation or status of the downhole device. This paper examines the application of digital data-encoding techniques to MWD mud pulse telemetry and shows ...

Design of a rotary valve orifice for a continuous wave mud pulse generator
Precision Engineering, 2015Abstract High-speed downhole transmission technology plays an important role in measurement while drilling (MWD) and logging while drilling (LWD) systems, where the continuous wave mud pulse transmission method is currently the most advantageous method for wireless downhole transmission.

Processes
Reliable front-end pressure-pulse generation is critical to mud-pulse telemetry because waveform distortion introduced at the rotary valve propagates through the telemetry chain and reduces downstream recoverability.
