Mud Pulse Logging While Drilling Telemetry System: Design, Development, and Demonstrations [PDF]
Mud pulse telemetry is a method of transmitting information from the vicinity of the drill bit to the surface drilling platform while drilling. Information can be conveyed through a flowing column of drilling mud by the presence or absence of pressure ...

High Data Rate MWD Mud Pulse Telemetry – From Mysteries to Discovery [PDF]
Our new approach to MWD mud pulse telemetry offers significant increases over conventional data rates. Using waveguide acoustics, we show that common drilling communications channels support carrier frequencies exceeding several hundred Hertz. Such signals are prone to attenuation over large drill pipe distances.

Abstract Deepwater exploration and production presents some of the industry's most complex challenges, requiring huge capital investment and long-term commitment. Subsea fields face exceptional challenges during drilling, cementing, and operations. Any downtime means project delay and lost production.

Replacing Mud Pulse Telemetry with an Electromagnetic System
In the budgeting of all major development projects, there is always a desire to capture the financial and operational opportunities of all new and existing technologies; however, this can be difficult if not proven to be viable in advance of the ...

Abstract The industry trend to drill wells faster and with greater precision in increasingly challenging formations results in a growing need for real-time measurement-while-drilling (MWD) and logging-while-drilling (LWD) data to manage and control the drilling process optimally.

On Methods of Advancing the Efficiency of Data Transmission of Mud Pulse Downhole Telemetry Systems
Due to the growth of the share of hard-to-recover oil and gas reserves, horizontal wells with greater lateral sections are becoming the standard in the drilling industry. In the process of directional drilling, because of the significant distance from the bit to the geophysical sensors, and the low efficiency of data transmission from downhole ...

Reliable Mud-Pulse Telemetry System for High-Resolution Real-Time Logs
For drilling directional wells and exact reservoir navigation, a broad spectrum of measurement-while-drilling (MWD) and logging-while-drilling (LWD) measurements, as well as drilling optimization-related measurements, are available.

Erosion of Mud Pulse Telemetry Tools: Numerical Simulation and Field Studies
The economic success of many drilling operations depends on the availability and reliability of real-time information about the drilling process. Mud pulse telemetry is currently the most common method of transmitting measurement-while-drilling (MWD) and

Applying Digital Data-Encoding Techniques to Mud Pulse Telemetry
ABSTRACT More and more downhole devices are requiring two-way communication with the surface to telemeter data and device status and/or receive telemetered instructions which effect the operation or status of the downhole device. This paper examines the application of digital data-encoding techniques to MWD mud pulse telemetry and shows ...
