Enhancing diabetic foot osteomyelitis diagnosis with metagenomics next‐generation sequencing, proof of concept

open access: yesDiabetic Medicine, Volume 43, Issue 4, April 2026.
The use of mNGS with the MinION tool clearly provides a significant advantage compared to routine culture by identifying a higher diversity of pathogens in diabetic foot osteomyelitis. It also highlights the value of this method in clinical decision making, despite the technical challenges inherent in metagenomic sequencing.

Tuning Circular Dichroism and Circularly Polarised Luminescence in Single Crystals of a Perylene Diimide Macrocycle

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 11, 9 March 2026.
The circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarised (CPL) of a bis‐perylene diimide macrocycle are measured in single crystals. These chiroptical properties are tuned by the macrocycle's π–π stacking interactions in the solid‐state. Abstract Chiral materials that manipulate circularly polarised light have burgeoning applications across optoelectronics,

Understanding the Hygienic Behavioral Dynamics of Ants Using Multi‐State Models

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 4, Page 361-370, April 2026.
Leaf‐cutting ants adjust grooming to pathogen risk and vulnerable nestmates. Multi‐state Markov models reveal shorter, frequent self‐grooming bouts and reduced allogrooming persistence under stress, optimizing social immunity via stigmergic decision‐making.

Combined Effect of Nisin and Ohmic Heating on Bacillus cereus Inactivation and Quality Preservation in Apple Juice

open access: yesJournal of Food Safety, Volume 46, Issue 2, April 2026.
Apple juice was prepared and treated using Lactococcus lactis fermentation combined with nisin‐assisted ohmic heating (60 V, 30 s). The combined treatment achieved complete inactivation of Bacillus cereus. This approach preserves juice quality while providing an energy‐efficient and sustainable processing method. ABSTRACT There is increasing demand for

Biodegradable HPMC–chitosan film for moisture retention and quality preservation in fresh‐cut mango

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 106, Issue 5, Page 2905-2916, 30 March 2026.
Abstract BACKGROUND Replacing conventional plastics with biodegradable solutions that control moisture loss in fresh‐cut produce is a strategic need. This study developed hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and chitosan (CS) films plasticised with glycerol (Gly) and evaluated their use as sealing lids for fresh‐cut mango. RESULTS The selected monolayer
