Se hace una revisión de la muerte fetal anteparto en el In stituto Materno Infantil "Concepción Villaveces de Acosta" del 1° de marzo de 1959 al 28 de febrero de 1963 entre fetos de más de 1.500 gramos. De 50.420 partos, 678 fetos murieron antes del parto (1.34 %) en 676 pacientes.

El porcentaje de muertes fetales inexplicadas oscila entre un 21% a 50%; se define como la muerte que ocurre en fetos con edad gestacional mayor de 20 semanas o peso superior a 500 g, en la cual ni la autopsia ni el examen histológico del cordón umbilical, placenta y membranas, se logra identificar la causa.
