Progress in fabrication and characterization of mullite whiskers

Journal of Micromechanics and Molecular Physics, 2021
Mullite has an orthorhombic crystal structure, with various advantages, such as high mechanical strength, and stable chemical and physical properties. Especially, mullite whiskers have been widely acknowledged to be potential candidates as reinforcing elements in the fabrication of ceramic-matrix composites.

Preparation of mullite whisker skeleton porous ceramic

Ceramics International, 2015
Abstract Sillimanite whisker skeleton porous ceramic was firstly prepared by an appropriate firing process from kaolinite and ammonium hexafluoroaluminate (AHA) as raw materials, then mullite whisker and corundum were produced by firing the sillimanite whisker skeleton at 1400 °C.

Synthesis of Mullite Whisker from Fly Ash

Journal of the Korean Ceramic Society, 2005
In this study, we attempted to recycle the fly ash as a mullite whisker with addition of Al₂O₃ to obtain the high yield of mullite whisker. During the reaction process, mullite whisker was formed with the reaction of amorphous α-Cristobalite and Anorthite above 1350℃.

Permittivity and Permeability of Mullite‐SiC‐Whisker and Spinel‐SiC‐Whisker Composites

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1998
Real and imaginary permittivity (ɛ′ and ɛ″, respectively) values were determined on mullite‐silicon carbide whisker (mullite‐SiC w ) composites, mullite‐ZrO 2 composites, and spinel‐SiC w composites, in the ...

High temperature performance of mullite whisker-reinforced ZTA

Journal of Composite Materials, 2016
In this work, an oxide-based ceramic matrix composite (CMC) consisting of a zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) matrix and reinforced with mullite whiskers is produced with the purpose of providing more oxidation resistance and cost-effective alternative to covalent discontinuously reinforced ceramics.

Mullite whisker felt and its application in composites

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1991
Abstract The Naval Surface Warfare Center has developed a process for the in situ preparation of 80% porous mullite whisker felt which consists of randomly oriented whiskers mutually intergrown, forming a rigid structure. The felt can be used as pre-forms for the preparation of metal and ceramic matrix composites.

Mullite whisker-mullite/yttrium aluminosilicate oxidation protective coatings for SiC coated C/C composites

Ceramics International, 2019
Abstract A novel mullite whisker-mullite/yttrium aluminosilicate coating was designed and prepared through a three-step process including molten salt, supersonic atmospheric plasma spraying and sol-hot dipping. The mullite whiskers were used to enhance the interface bonding between mullite and SiC layer.

Effects of in situ synthesized mullite whiskers on compressive strength of mullite fiber brick

Ceramics International, 2016
Abstract The method of in situ synthesis of mullite whiskers by gas-phase deposition and reaction was applied to improve the compressive strength of the mullite fiber brick. During the preparation process, silica sol, Al(NO 3 ) 3 solution and NH 4 F solution were introduced into the fibrous brick in the form of ions or sol through vacuum ...

Oxidation behavior of SiC whisker reinforced mullite (−ZrO2) composites

Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 1989
Abstract The oxidation behavior of hot-pressed 20 vol% SiC whisker-mullite matrix (with and without 10 vol% ZrO2) composites was investigated at 1000 and 1200°C in air for up to 100 h. The oxidation scales were examined by scanning electron microscopy and wavelength-dispersive X-ray analysis. The oxidation of both composites occurred slowly at 1000°C
