Actuating and Sensing Composites of Liquid Crystal Elastomers and Poly(ionic liquid)s

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ionic conductive, mechanically tough, flexible, and stretchable filaments of a composite material comprising a liquid crystal elastomer and a poly(ionic liquid) are produced through 3D printing, which exhibit large actuation strain under stimulation and electrical resistance variation in response to deformation or environmental condition changes. Their

Ray-tracing analysis of crosstalk in multi-core polymer optical fibers

open access: yesOptics Express, 2010
The aim of this paper is to present a new ray-tracing model which describes the propagation of light in multi-core polymer optical fibers (MCPOFs), taking into account the crosstalk among their cores. The new model overcomes many of the limitations of previous approaches allowing us to simulate MCPOFs of arbitrary designs.

In Situ 3D Bioprinting: Impact of Cross‐Linking on the Adhesive Properties of Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In situ 3D bioprinting enables the direct deposition of cell‐laden, adhesive biomaterials for on‐site tissue regeneration. This review provides a comprehensive overview of how cross‐linking influences the bioadhesive properties of hydrogels used in 3D bioprinting, highlighting cross‐linking triggers, bioadhesion mechanisms, polymer interpenetration ...

Optoelectronic Synaptic Devices Using Molecular Telluride Phase‐Change Inks for Three‐Factor Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Optoelectronic synaptic devices based on solution‐processed molecular telluride GST‐225 phase‐change inks are demonstrated for three‐factor learning. A global optical signal broadcast through a silicon waveguide induces non‐volatile conductance updates exclusively in locally electrically flagged memristors.

Bragg reflection waveguide as a source of wavelength-multiplexed polarization-entangled photon pairs

open access: yes, 2012
We put forward a new highly efficient source of paired photons entangled in polarization with an ultra-large bandwidth. The photons are generated by means of a conveniently designed spontaneous parametric down-conversion process in a semiconductor type ...

Shaping of Biohybrid Functional Living Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates a strategy for shaping living mycelium into functional materials by directing its natural growth. Nanoparticles armor hyphae, micron‐scale particles entangle within the network, and printed hydrogel architectures steer expansion, creating defined geometries.

Generalized Method to Describe the Propagation of Pulses in Classical and Specialty Optical Fibers

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2019
The comprehension of pulsed light propagation is of paramount importance in fiber optics. Here, we present a general method to describe the propagation of pulses in any kind of optical fiber, regardless of its fabrication process or constituent materials.
