Simple Multi-core Optical Fiber Accelerometer

Advanced Photonics 2018 (BGPP, IPR, NP, NOMA, Sensors, Networks, SPPCom, SOF), 2018
We report on a compact accelerometer built with strongly coupled multi-core optical fiber. The device was placed in cantilever position. An ultra-miniature seismic mass was used to tune the device sensitivity and operating frequency range.

Interferometric Fiber-Optic Gyroscope Using Multi-Core Fiber

2018 European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), 2018
A novel configuration of an optical gyroscope which consists of multi-core fiber (MCF) and fan-in/fan-out devices is proposed. We fabricated the sensor coil by using seven-core fibers and successfully demonstrated an MCF gyroscope for the first time to our knowledge.

Thermally-Driven Mode Coupling in Multi-Core Optical Fibers

Advanced Photonics 2018 (BGPP, IPR, NP, NOMA, Sensors, Networks, SPPCom, SOF), 2018
We present results on multi-core fibers (MCFs) for optical amplification/lasing obtained by combined thermal-optical finite-element method (FEM) simulations. Refractive index variation due to quantum defect caused heating is simulated to evaluate thermal dissipation-induced index gradients.

Specialty multi-core optical fiber for biomedical lensless endoscopes

Optica Advanced Photonics Congress 2022, 2022
We demonstrate a novel fiber-optic component, a “tapered multi-core fiber”, designed for integration into ultra-miniaturized endoscopes for minimally invasive imaging. We develop a numerical model and use it to identify optimal designs which we then fabricate and experimentally validate.

Homogeneous multi-core fibers in future optical networks

2017 19th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2017
We discuss the prospects of using homogeneous, single mode multi-core fibers in future optical transmission systems. We describe the key features of such fibers including inter-core crosstalk and inter-core propagation delays together with the impact these features might have in different network scenarios. Finally, we describe a number of transmission

Distributed Supermode Coupling Measurements in Multi-Core Optical Fibers

Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2020, 2020
Coupling of supermodes in multicore fibers is investigated exploiting an OFDR to measure each core when injecting light into another one. Distributed analysis of cross-core coupling is reported for the first time in multicore fibers.

Multi-core optical fiber in a passive optical local area network

2018 International Conference on Innovative Trends in Computer Engineering (ITCE), 2018
This paper describes cases where the new technology of multi-core fibers and passive optical networks is used to solve the problem of a lack of space in duct pipes for a computer local area network (LAN). A solution to the congestion problems in computer LANs that involves increasing the number of users per single trunk with a passive optical network ...

Uncoupled Multi-core Fiber Design for Practical Bidirectional Optical Communications

Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2022, 2022
We review and discuss the design factors and considerations on MCFs for bidirectional transmissions, including connection polarity and crosstalk requirements. We also introduce MCFs suitable for bidirectional long-haul and short-reach transmissions.

Multi-Core Fiber Technology: Next Generation Optical Communication Strategy

IEEE Communications Standards Magazine, 2017
Space-division multiplexing is expected to be a key technology both for dealing with the future capacity crunch facing traditional single- mode fiber and for realizing a sustainable optical network that can accommodate the various data streams originating from, for example, future 5G communication, the Internet of Things, and machine-to-machine ...

Multi-core Few-mode optical fibers with large Aeff

European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication, 2012
We designed and fabricated 7-core and 19-core few-mode fibers with large Aeff of 170μm2 (LP01 mode). We discuss the potentials and required challenges of realizing large-Aeff multi-core few-mode fibers taking intra-core and inter-core cross-talk into account.
