Spacial cognitive timbre dimensions of physical modeling sounds using multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) techniques

The cognitive spacial dimensionality of timbre in the minds of listeners is investigated. Physical models of strings, rods, plates, and membranes and couplings of these obtaining simple musical instruments are used. Here, for each model, eight sounds have been produced by linear change of only one parameter of the physical model.

The matrix of inter-element distances, a Euclidean Distance Matrix (EDM), is symmetric with zero diagonal. It thus has N(N-1)/2 distinct values, which we know are a function of 3N-6 xyz coordinates. Indeed, the EDM for the elements of a 3-D array has rank 3.
