Coastal Bathymetry from Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data: Comparisons with High Resolution Multibeam Bathymetry

Marine Geophysical Researches, 2006
We present a large-scale quantitative test of a hyperspectral remote-sensing reflectance algorithm. We show that coastal bathymetry can be adequately derived through model inversions using data from the Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer instrument.

Statistical Characterization of Multibeam Bathymetry Data

2001
Abstract : Multibeam sonar systems produce high-density depth data of the ocean floor. Point pattern analysis of the individual depth points is conducted to determine an appropriate parameterized point-to-event distance distribution, F(y). This distribution is needed to quantify the lower bound on the estimated position error of a terrain-based ...

Predicting Seafloor Facies from Multibeam Bathymetry and Backscatter Data

Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing, 2004
An empirical technique has been developed that is used to predict seafloor facies from multibeam bathymetry and acoustic backscatter data collected in central Santa Monica Bay, California. A supervised classification used backscatter and sediment data to classify the area into zones of rock, gravelly-muddy sand, muddy sand, and mud.

Application of high-resolution beamforming to multibeam swath bathymetry

Proceedings of OCEANS '93, 2002
In the context of swath bathymetry with multibeam echo-sounders, seafloor echoes received at regularly spaced elements of a hydrophone array are summed coherently to form a number of directional beams from which athwartships depth measurements are derived.

Improving spatial resolution of interferometric bathymetry in multibeam echosounders

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2008
Most multibeam echosounders used in seafloor mapping use the interferometry method for bathymetry measurement, based on the zero-crossing of the phase difference between two sub-arrays. In this approach, only one sounding is computed per formed beam, and the spatial resolution is linked to the beam footprint extent. Using the whole content of the phase

Bathymetry degradation causes for frequency modulated multibeam echo sounders

2012 Oceans, 2012
FM-modulated signals with pulse compression are used in the new generation of bathymetric multibeam echo sounders in order to reach higher swath while keeping a high resolution. However, the expected performances are not reached on field data. This article discusses two different effects impacting the bathymetric measurement (Doppler effect and ...

Improved vehicle based multibeam bathymetry using sub-maps and SLAM

2005 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2005
This paper presents an algorithm to improve sub-sea acoustic multibeam bottom mapping based on the simultaneous mapping and localization (SLAM) methodology. Multibeam bathymetry from underwater water vehicles can yield valuable large scale terrain maps of the sea door, but the overall accuracy of these maps is typically limited by the accuracy of the ...

Radially symmetric coherence between satellite gravity and multibeam bathymetry grids

Marine Geophysical Research, 2012
We compute the radially symmetric coherence between multibeam bathymetry and satellite gravity grids in 25 areas distributed around the world. In contrast to previous studies employing one-dimensional analysis of data along profiles, our results cannot be biased by unseen off-track topography.

Doppler effect on bathymetry using frequency modulated multibeam echo sounders

OCEANS 2011 IEEE - Spain, 2011
The latest generation of bathymetric multibeam echo sounders uses FM modulated signal with pulse compression in order to explore deeper seafloor while keeping a high resolution. Practically, the expected performances are not reached, and the first explanation made is this is due to the Doppler from the antenna motion which affects the FM signals ...
