Island multicast: the combination of IP multicast with application-level multicast
2004 IEEE International Conference on Communications (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37577), 2004The Internet nowadays consists of multicast-capable domains or "islands" interconnected by multicast-incapable routers. In order to achieve efficient global multicast, we propose and study island multicast (IM) where overlay connections are used between islands while IP multicast is used within an island.

This article presents new multicasting algorithms for the mesh under the wormhole routing mode and using the read-and-route facility. These new algorithms perform generally faster than the algorithms previously described in the literature under the same model.

There are many methods for making a multicast protocol “reliable.” At one end of the spectrum, a reliable multicast protocol might offer tomicity guarantees, such as all-or-nothing delivery, delivery ordering, and perhaps additional properties such as virtually synchronous addressing.

Most current schemes for multicast routing assume that multicast routers participate both in forwarding multicast packets and in control algorithms for routing, resource reservation, and group management. By separating data and control flow, and by centralizing control in distinct control elements, we have designed a simple and scalable approach to IP ...
