Comparative analysis of Geotechnical and Geophysical Investigations for average shear wave velocity in Metro Manila

open access: yesEnergy Reports, 2023
Philippines is one of the most seismically active countries in Southeast Asia and records at least 20 earthquakes per day according to the PHIVOLCS. Vs30 is defined as the shear wave velocity of the upper 30-meter subsurface profile which is an important

Nondestructive testing of railway embankments by measuring multi-modal dispersion of surface waves induced by high-speed trains with linear geophone arrays

open access: yesSeismica
To effectively address engineering challenges and risks, it is crucial to characterize mechanical properties of near-surface environments. The Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) has proven to be a valuable active seismic imaging technique by ...

Geomorphology Characterization of Ica Basin and Its Influence on the Dynamic Response of Soils for Urban Seismic Hazards in Ica, Peru

open access: yesInternational Journal of Geophysics, 2018
We evaluated the influence of the geomorphology of Peru’s Ica Basin on the dynamic response of soils of the city of Ica. We applied five geophysical methods: spectral ratio (H/V), frequency-wavenumber (F-K), multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW),

Multi‐scale geophysical mapping of the brine and bedrock surfaces along the Dolores River, Paradox Valley, Colorado, December 2023

open access: yesNear Surface Geophysics, Volume 24, Issue 1, Page 36-49, February 2026.
Abstract Total dissolved solids derived from salt dome–sourced brine in the underlying alluvial aquifer substantially increase with distance in the reach of the Dolores River that passes through Paradox Valley in southwestern Colorado. The area has been the site of salinity control operations since the 1990s to reduce salt loading to the downstream ...

Enhancing fieldwork productivity in subsurface characterization: advancements in data acquisition with MASW-DS

open access: yesGeomechanics and Geophysics for Geo-Energy and Geo-Resources
The multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) method utilizes low-frequency surface waves to characterize the shallow subsurface layers. It is a very useful tool in geotechnical engineering for evaluating soil quality and mapping the characteristics ...

Evaluating Seismic Ambient Noise Techniques for Detecting Ice‐Bearing Rocks on the Moon

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 12, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract One of the primary objectives of upcoming lunar missions is to locate ice‐bearing rocks at the South Pole. While evidence for their presence exists, the exact distribution and quantity remain uncertain. In this study, we evaluate the potential of seismic ambient noise techniques—including seismic interferometry, H/V spectral ratios ...

Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) to Estimate the Shear Wave Velocity for Engineering Characterization of Soils at Hawassa Town, Southern Ethiopia

open access: yesInternational Journal of Geophysics, 2022
Site characterization is a prerequisite for the successful and economic design of engineering structures and earthworks by providing geological information for any proposed project. Until now, no detail study has been carried out on the site characterization and classification using shear wave velocity (Vs) up to the top 30 m depth in Hawassa town. For

Neural Machine Translation of Seismic Ambient Noise for Soil Nature and Water Saturation Characterization

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 13, 16 July 2025.
Abstract Soil nature and water saturation of the near‐surface directly influence land use resilience and sustainability in urban areas facing intense climate forcing and human activity. Seismic methods are widely applied in this context for subsurface characterization and monitoring, but often fall short in delivering joint geological, hydrogeological,

A frequency‐domain beamforming procedure for extracting Rayleigh wave attenuation coefficients and small‐strain damping ratio from 2D ambient noise array measurements

open access: yesEarthquake Spectra, Volume 41, Issue 2, Page 1333-1363, May 2025.
The small‐strain damping ratio plays a crucial role in assessing the response of soil deposits to earthquake‐induced ground motions and general dynamic loading. The damping ratio can theoretically be inverted for after extracting frequency‐dependent Rayleigh wave attenuation coefficients from wavefields collected during surface wave testing.
