Multicore Fiber Technology

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2015
Multicore fibers (MCFs) are expected as a good candidate for overcoming the capacity limit of a current optical communication system. This paper describes the recent progress on the MCFs for space-division multiplexing to be utilized in future large capacity long-distance transmission systems.

Multicore fiber distributed feedback lasers

Optics Letters, 2012
We demonstrate parallel fabrication of seven fiber distributed feedback (DFB) lasers in a hexagonally arrayed multicore core Er doped fiber with 40 μm core spacing. DFB grating cavities 8 cm long and operating near 1545 nm were fabricated with a single UV inscription exposure.

Mode shaping in multicore fibers

Optics Letters, 2007
We propose a novel multicore fiber design strategy for obtaining a flat in-phase supermode that optimizes utilization of the active medium inversion in the multiple cores. The spatially flat supermode is achieved by engineering the fiber so that the total mutual coupling between neighboring active cores is equal.

1.2-kW all-fiber Yb-doped multicore fiber amplifier

Optics Letters, 2023
We have demonstrated a record-high 1.2 kW, all-fiber multicore amplifier using a six-core single-mode Yb-doped fiber and a multicore pump-signal combiner (PSC). The output power is limited by the pump power of 1.9 kW. We have developed double-clad six-core fibers and PSCs for this demonstration.

Multicore Optical Fiber Components

SPIE Proceedings, 1987
The paper deals with Multicore Optical Fibres /MOFs/. Such fibres have two or more single mode or multimode or simultaneously both kinds of cores distributed in the cladding. The individual cores could be naturally coupled or not. We have made a few families of microoptical components of these fibres. These components have been used for construction of

Multicore fiber with rectangular cross-section

Optics Letters, 2014
We have fabricated, to our knowledge, the first rectangular cross-section multicore fiber with eight cores arranged in a line. We have shown that the rectangular cross-section remains practically unchanged during the fiber-drawing process. The heterogeneous version of the proposed fiber design could be beneficial for crosstalk reduction because of the ...

Miniature multicore optical fiber vibration sensor

Optics Letters, 2017
We demonstrate a compact and versatile interferometric vibration sensor that operates in reflection mode. To build the device, a short segment of symmetric strongly coupled multicore optical fiber (MCF) is fusion spliced to a single-mode optical fiber (SMF). One end of the MCF segment is cleaved and placed in a cantilever position.

Fiber-optic delay line using multicore fiber

Bulletin of the Lebedev Physics Institute, 2017
A fiber-optic delay line based on a multicore optical fiber is fabricated for the first time. Due to the optical pulse sequential passage over all cores, the time delay of the optical signal of 45.0 μs is obtained at the optical fiber length of only 1300 m. The use of the seven-core optical fiber allows a sevenfold reduction in the used fiber length in

Microstructured and multicore fibers and fiber lasers

2006 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference, 2006
Microstructured and multi-core fiber lasers were fabricated that have produced more than 1.3 W/cm at 1.5 /spl mu/m. Near 2 W single frequency, single-transverse-mode output was demonstrated.

Multicore erbium doped fiber amplifiers

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
ABSTRACT We review recent progress of multi -core erbium -doped fiber amplifiers (MC -EDFA). We confirmed by demonstrating a core -pumped MC -EDFA that MC -EDFs have practical amplification characteristic s and core -to-core crosstalk . Three types of cladding -pumped MC -EDFAs are also reviewed , one uses free space optics, other uses a fiber b undled
