Dual-beam interference from a lensed multicore fiber and its application to optical trapping [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A multicore all-fiber probe is demonstrated that has been fabricated using an electric arc fusion splicer. Interference of the fiber output when coherent light is coupled into two cores is investigated.

$\mathcal{PT}$ phase control in circular multicore fibers

open access: yes, 2016
We consider light dynamics in a circular multicore fiber with balanced gain and loss core distribution, and show that transition from unbroken to broken $\mathcal{PT}$ phases can be conveniently controlled by geometric twist of the fiber.

Optical interconnect solution with plasmonic modulator and Ge photodetector array [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We report on an optical chip-to-chip interconnect solution, thereby demonstrating plasmonics as a solution for ultra-dense, high-speed short-reach communications. The interconnect comprises a densely integrated plasmonic Mach-Zehnder modulator array that

Multicore Optical Fiber Sensors

open access: yesCLEO Pacific Rim Conference, 2018
We review recent multicore optical fiber-based interferometric sensors for vibration, strain and temperature monitoring. Simple, highly sensitive sensors operating in reflection and transmission mode have been fabricated using short segments of strongly coupled core MCFs.

Routing Optimization of Cable‐Driven Octopus‐Inspired Manipulators With Minimal Actuation via Genetic Algorithm and Finite Element Method

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Soft robotic arms are promising for gentle grasping but often rely on bulky actuation systems. This work presents a computational design framework that optimizes tendon number and routing to achieve target grasps with fewer actuators. Validated on an octopus‐inspired underwater arm, the approach enables efficient, underactuated soft manipulators for ...

Discrimination of Temperature and Strain in Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis Using a Multicore Optical Fiber

open access: yesSensors, 2018
Brillouin optical time domain analysis is the sensing of temperature and strain changes along an optical fiber by measuring the frequency shift changes of Brillouin backscattering.

Highly birefringent multicore optical fibers [PDF]

open access: yesCLEO: 2014, 2014
We report on the fabrication and characterization of two polarization maintaining multicore fibres, one with three and the other with ninety eight cores. The beat length and polarization orientation are characterized.
