Simulation of ultracompact multimode interference devices

In this paper, a new design of tapered N/spl times/N MMI devices has be proposed. Based on the hyperbolic structure, the smaller device dimensions compared with conventional MMI can be achieved. Moreover, the performance of N/spl times/N hyperbolic MMIs are numerically investigated by the finite-difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM).

Multimode interference bistable laser diode

We propose a novel bistable laser diode (BLD) with active multimode interference (MMI) cavity. Bistable switching can be realized between two cross-coupled modes by means of gain saturation. Static characteristics of the multimode interference (MMI)-BLD are analyzed using a finite-difference beam propagation method.

Differential interference in planar multimode waveguides

The paper presents the results of investigations on a planar differential waveguide interferometer. Changes of the refraction index of the waveguide covert result in phase differences between the ortogonal modes of the same order, causing changes in the state of polarisation of the light at the outlet of the sensor.
