Efficient Coupling for Nonlinear Multiphase Flow with Strong Gravity
SPE Reservoir Simulation Symposium, 2013Abstract The Fully Implicit Method (FIM) is widely used to discretize the nonlinear conservation equations that govern multiphase flow in porous media. Although FIM is unconditionally stable, the nonlinear solver, which is typically based on Newton’s method, often fails to converge for large time steps.

Development of coupled numerical model for simulation of multiphase soil
Computers and Geotechnics, 2018Abstract In this paper, a coupled multiphase model considering both non-linearities of water retention curves and solid state modeling is proposed. The solid displacements and the pressures of both water and air phases are unknowns of the proposed model. The finite element method is used to solve the governing differential equations.

Coupled Transport in Multiphase Systems: A Theory of Drying
1998In this article the method of volume averaging has been applied to the process of simultaneous heat, mass, and momentum transport in an effort to illustrate the general structure of coupled transport processes in multiphase systems. In the drying process, significant coupling occurs both at the macroscopic level and at the microscopic ...

Robust Fully-Coupled Multiphase Flow and Geomechanics Simulation
SPE Large Scale Computing and Big Data Challenges in Reservoir Simulation Conference and Exhibition, 2014Abstract Material nonlinearity; boundary and arching constraints; non-uniform reservoir flows; sliding along material interfaces or faults are among the causes of shear deformation or changes in the total stresses, and the resulting stress redistribution in hydrocarbon reservoirs.
