Two-way fluid-structure coupling analysis of liquid lead-bismuth main coolant pump based on three different blade materials

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology
The main coolant pump (MCP) operates in a high-temperature, high-flow, and corrosive liquid heavy metal environment, and structure analysis have complicated fluid-structure coupling problems. In order to study the coupling characteristics between the MCP

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

Mesoscale numerical approach to predict macroscale fluid flow problems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We present a detailed analysis of the lattice Boltzmann method to simulate an incompressible fluid flow problem. Thorough derivation of macroscopic hydrodynamics equations from the continuous Boltzmann equation is performed.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

DNS of compressible multiphase flows through the Eulerian approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper we present three multiphase flow models suitable for the study of the dynamics of compressible dispersed multiphase flows. We adopt the Eulerian approach because we focus our attention to dispersed (concentration smaller than 0.001) and ...

Affecting the Properties of Copper–Graphene Electroconductive Composite by Severe Plastic Deformation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Copper‐based composites enhanced with carbon feature convenient mechanical properties and favorable electric conductivity. Processing via deformation and thermomechanical treatments can introduce advantageous microstructures further enhancing their performance. Herein, copper–graphene powder‐based composites are directly consolidated via rotary swaging

Direct numerical simulation of the drag force in bubble swarms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This paper studies the swarm effect on the drag force in bubbly flows. From literature it is well-known that for relatively small bubbles, the drag force increases with the bubble hold-up due to additional hindrance experienced by the bubbles caused by ...

Convex Relaxations and Linear Approximation for Optimal Power Flow in Multiphase Radial Networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Distribution networks are usually multiphase and radial. To facilitate power flow computation and optimization, two semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations of the optimal power flow problem and a linear approximation of the power flow are proposed. We
