Modeling Restrained Shrinkage Induced Cracking in Concrete Rings Using the Thick Level Set Approach

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
Modeling restrained shrinkage-induced damage and cracking in concrete is addressed herein. The novel Thick Level Set (TLS) damage growth and crack propagation model is used and adapted by introducing shrinkage contribution into the formulation.

Multiphysics Simulations of a Thermoelectric Generator [PDF]

open access: yesEnergy Procedia, 2015
Transient multiphysics simulations are performed to investigate the thermal and electric performance of a thermoelectric generator (TEG) module placed between hot and cold blocks. Effects of heat radiation, thermal and electric contact on the TEG are examined and the simulated results are compared with experimental data.

Multiphysics Measurements for Detection of Gas Hydrate Formation in Undersaturated Oil Coreflooding Experiments with Seawater Injection

open access: yesEnergies
A solid phase of natural gas hydrates can form from dissolved gas in oil during cold water injection into shallow undersaturated oil reservoirs. This creates significant risks to oil production due to potential permeability reduction and flow assurance ...

Correlation between total pressure losses of highly loaded annular diffusers and integral stage design parameters

open access: yesJournal of the Global Power and Propulsion Society, 2018
Diffusers convert kinetic flow energy into a rise in static pressure. This pressure recovery is the primary aerodynamic design objective for exhaust gas diffusers in power-generating steam and gas turbines. The total pressure loss is an equally important

Axial Motion Characterization of a Helical Ionic Polymer Metal Composite Actuator and Its Application in 3-DOF Micro-Parallel Platforms

open access: yesActuators, 2021
In this work, a helical ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) was fabricated by thermal treatment in a mold with helix grooves. The axial actuation behaviors of the helical IPMC actuator were observed, and the electromechanical and electrochemical ...

HAZniCS – Software Components for Multiphysics Problems

open access: yesACM Transactions on Mathematical Software, 2023
We introduce the software toolbox HAZniCS for solving interface-coupled multiphysics problems. HAZniCS is a suite of modules that combines the well-known FEniCS framework for finite element discretization with solver and graph library HAZmath. The focus of this article is on the design and implementation of robust and efficient solver algorithms which ...

Multiscale Modeling of Thermoplastic Matrix Composites for Cryogenic Hydrogen Storage Applications

open access: yesModelling
The performance of thermoplastic matrix composites for linerless Type V cryotanks is evaluated via a partially coupled, multiscale computational workflow with the objective of assessing the choice of thermoplastic matrix material under realistic ...

Multiphysics Simulations of Collisionless Plasmas [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2018
Collisionless plasmas, mostly present in astrophysical and space environments, often require a kinetic treatment as given by the Vlasov equation. Unfortunately, the six-dimensional Vlasov equation can only be solved on very small parts of the considered spatial domain. However, in some cases, e.g.

Encyclopedia of 2D β′‐In2Se3 Growth Using Chemical Vapor Deposition: The Effects of Synthesis Parameters Onto Material Quality

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A distinct semi‐confined inner‐tube chemical vapor deposition geometry enables reproducible, large‐area growth of phase‐pure 2D β′‐In2Se3 from InI + Se precursors. Engineering local vapor transport and optimizing precursor delivery and temperature–time conditions yield uniform continuous films.
