Sign evolution on multiple time scales. Introductory comments
Th is thematic issue explores aspects of sign emergence, development and change. Rather than static entities, signs are approached as dynamic relations that grow, develop and change over time in response to various environmental, cognitive, social or ...

Analyzing Frequency response of nano electro mechanical-resonator based on non-local elasticity theory [PDF]
In recent years, many experimental observations showed that by decreasing the micro- and nano-beams thicknesses size effect appears and classical continuum theory cannot be used for micro- and nano-beams modeling.

Analysing forced oscillators with multiple time scales [PDF]
We present a novel formulation, called the WaMPDE, for solving systems with forced autonomous components. An important feature of the WaMPDE is its ability to capture frequency modulation (FM) in a natural and compact manner. This is made possible by a key new concept: that of warped time, related to normal time through separate time scales.

Multiple timing and spatial scaling for bifurcations
AbstractScaling time and spatial domains often seem natural in ODEs, but unfortunately, its useful explicit form does not always agree with intuition. After reviewing the well-known methods, multiple timing and averaging, we will show that algebraic timelike variables may play a part in bifurcations.

Geosensor Network Optimisation to Support Decisions at Multiple Scales
Geosensor networks are often used to monitor processes at different spatial scales. Existing approaches for configuring geosensor locations (i.e. sample design) do not address two key challenges: 1) they are limited to a single scale of analysis and do ...

De La Vallée Poussin-type inequality for impulsive dynamic equations on time scales
We derive a de La Vallée Poussin-type inequality for impulsive dynamic equations on time scales. This inequality is often used in conjunction with disconjugacy and/or (non)oscillation.

The evaporation duct is a particular type of atmospheric structure that always appears on the open ocean. Predicting the evaporation duct height (EDH) accurately and in a timely manner is of great significance for the practical application of marine ...

Method of multiple scales with three time scales [PDF]
AbstractSome confusion appears in the literature regarding the extension of the method of multiple scales to three or more time scales. While the work of Murdock and Wang [1] correctly indicates some obstructions to such an extension in some types of problems, other work suggests that the extension should almost never be possible [2]. These pessimistic

Algorithmic Reduction of Biological Networks with Multiple Time Scales [PDF]
AbstractWe present a symbolic algorithmic approach that allows to compute invariant manifolds and corresponding reduced systems for differential equations modeling biological networks which comprise chemical reaction networks for cellular biochemistry, and compartmental models for pharmacology, epidemiology and ecology.

Multiple time scales of bank-full discharge in the Yellow River
Under the influence of climate changes, the hydrologic system has the characteristics of multiple time scales. The bank-full discharge,as a function of inflow conditions, also has the characteristics of multiple time scales. This phenomenon was studied based
