On the Diversity and Multiplicity of Theories in Mathematics Education

The paper starts with a brief history of theories that guided mathematics education research presented in PME meetings and publications. There seems to be a “feeling” that mathematics education should rely on theoretical grounds to become a legitimate field of research. Yet, the current situation with multiplicity of theories is troubling.

AbstractThis paper uses the framework of reverse mathematics to analyze the proof theoretic content of several statements concerning multiplication of countable well‐orderings. In particular, a division algorithm for ordinal arithmetic is shown to be equivalent to the subsystem ATR0.
