Note on Qualitative Robustness of Multivariate Sample Mean and Median [PDF]

open access: goldJournal of Probability and Statistics, 2013
It is known that the robustness properties of estimators depend on the choice of a metric in the space of distributions. We introduce a version of Hampel's qualitative robustness that takes into account then-asymptotic normality of estimators inRk, and examine such robustness of two standard location estimators inℝk.

Spatial medians, depth functions and multivariate Jensen's inequality [PDF]

open access: green, 2007
For any given partial order in a $d$-dimensional euclidean space, under mild regularity assumptions, we show that the intersection of closed (generalized) intervals containing more than 1/2 of the probability mass, is a non-empty compact interval. This property is shared with common intervals on real line, where the intersection is the median set of ...

Nonparametric Clustering Stopping Rule Based on Multivariate Median [PDF]

open access: green
This paper introduces a novel nonparametric criterion for determining the appropriate number of clusters, which is derived from the spatial median. The method is constructed to reconcile two competing objectives of cluster analysis: the preservation of internal homogeneity within clusters and the maximization of heterogeneity across clusters.

High-dimensional multivariate analysis of variance via geometric median and bootstrapping [PDF]

open access: bronzeBiometrics
ABSTRACT The geometric median, which is applicable to high-dimensional data, can be viewed as a generalization of the univariate median used in 1-dimensional data. It can be used as a robust estimator for identifying the location of multi-dimensional data and has a wide range of applications in real-world scenarios.

Asymptotic Properties of the Generalized Median in the Case of Multivariate Normality

open access: closedJournal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B: Statistical Methodology, 1985
SUMMARY The generalized affine invariant median proposed by Oja (1983) is, in the case of multivariate normality, shown to be asymptotically at least as efficient as the spatial median.

On Multivariate Median Regression [PDF]

open access: yesBernoulli, 1999
The author considers an extension of the concept of least absolute deviation regression for problems with multivariate response. The approach is based on a transformation and retransformation technique that chooses a data-driven coordinate system for transforming the response vectors and then retransform the estimate of the matrix of regression ...
