Two rodent suborders have evolved missing amino acids in the lipid‐binding region of apolipoprotein E

open access: yesLipids, Volume 60, Issue 3, Page 143-153, May 2025.
Abstract The order Rodentia comprises nearly 45% of all extant taxa, currently organized into 31 living families, some 450 genera, and roughly 2010 species (Kelt & Patton, 2020). Considering that rodents began evolving at least 66 million years ago, it is not surprising that they have diversified into five distinct suborders.

Co-evolution of the parasitic fungi Pneumocystis and their Muridae rodent hosts in Southeast Asia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Pneumocystis species are opportunistic and airborne-transmitted fungi that infect the lungs of numerous mammalian species. These highly diversified fungi are characterized by strong host specificity, probably associated with co-speciation. In this study,

Update of the Scientific Opinion on the risks for human health related to the presence of perchlorate in food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 23, Issue 5, May 2025.
Abstract The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2014 risk assessment on perchlorate in food. Perchlorate is a contaminant of both natural and anthropogenic sources present in food and drinking water. It is a substrate for the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) and competitively inhibits the uptake of iodide into the thyroid.

Evolutionary systematics and biogeography of the arid habitat‐adapted rodent genus Gerbillus (Rodentia, Muridae): a mostly Plio‐Pleistocene African history

open access: yes, 2016
The systematics of the arid-adapted Old World Gerbillus rodent genus has always been challenging, with many different taxonomic arrangements proposed. Beyond such taxonomic aspects, the timing and geographical pattern of the evolutionary history of this ...

Effect of Land‐Use on Hantavirus Infection Among Introduced and Endemic Small Mammals of Madagascar

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Addressing the risk of Hantavirus spillover from animal reservoirs to humans requires identifying the local reservoirs and the predictors of infection. We screened a collection of 1880 small mammals for Hantavirus RNA from northeastern Madagascar, and specifically investigated the influence of diverse natural or anthropized habitats as well as animal ...
