Regional selection acting on the OFD1 gene family. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
The OFD1 (oral-facial-digital, type 1) gene is implicated in several developmental disorders in humans. The X-linked OFD1 (OFD1X) is conserved in Eutheria. Knowledge about the Y-linked paralog (OFD1Y) is limited.

Update of the Scientific Opinion on the risks for human health related to the presence of perchlorate in food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 23, Issue 5, May 2025.
Abstract The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2014 risk assessment on perchlorate in food. Perchlorate is a contaminant of both natural and anthropogenic sources present in food and drinking water. It is a substrate for the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) and competitively inhibits the uptake of iodide into the thyroid.

Sympatric Occurrence of 3 Arenaviruses, Tanzania

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2010
To determine the specificity of Morogoro virus for its reservoir host, we studied its host range and genetic diversity in Tanzania. We found that 2 rodent species other than Mastomys natalensis mice carry arenaviruses. Analysis of 340 nt of the viral RNA

Roads diverged in a wood: Proteins and RNAs encoded by cytochrome b (CYTB) gene in health and disease

open access: yesClinical and Translational Discovery, Volume 5, Issue 1, February 2025.
The latest groundbreaking study uncovers a dual translation pattern of the CYTB gene, which uses a standard genetic codon at the cytosolic ribosome to encode a novel protein CYTB‐187AA. The CYTB gene also generates long non‐coding RNAs that are engaged in a variety of physiological and pathological processes.

Caracterización ecomorfológica de los Murinae y “Cricetidae” hipsodontos (Rodentia) del Plio-Pleistoceno ibérico [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
[EN] In order to make inferences on the climatic range of extinct rodent genera, cluster analysis using dental morphological variables is performed. The goal of this study is to obtain rodent groupings which relate extinct an extant rodent genera on the

Challenges and Opportunities in Exploring Non‐Motor Symptoms in 6‐Hydroxydopamine Models of Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 2, February 2025.
Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, involves early‐emerging but poorly understood non‐motor symptoms. The widely used 6‐hydroxydopamine (6‐OHDA) rodent model provides valuable insights into these symptoms and PD's complexity.

Working with Miraculous Mice: Mus musculus as a Model Organism

open access: yesCurrent Protocols, Volume 4, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract The laboratory mouse has been described as a “miracle” model organism, providing a window by which we may gain an understanding of ourselves. Since the first recorded mouse experiment in 1664, the mouse has become the most used animal model in biomedical research.

Seewis virus, a genetically distinct hantavirus in the Eurasian common shrew (Sorex araneus)

open access: yesVirology Journal, 2007
More than 20 years ago, hantaviral antigens were reported in tissues of the Eurasian common shrew (Sorex araneus), Eurasian water shrew (Neomys fodiens) and common mole (Talpa europea), suggesting that insectivores, or soricomorphs, might serve as ...

Paleopteran molecular clock: Time drift and recent acceleration

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2024.
Constant evolution rates, which form the foundation of the strict molecular clock model, do not apply in the case of Paleoptera, highlighting a notable bias in the molecular clock hypothesis. The current biodiversity may be the outcome of a relatively recent, exponential increase in base substitution rates.
