2009Otok Murter ulazi u pisanu povijest srednjega vijeka u zadnjoj trećini 13. stoljeća, kad se za njega, kao i za otoke Žirje i Jartu, otimaju zadarska i šibenska komuna. Vrlo je izvjesno da su Murter, Žirje i Jarta u ranom srednjem vijeku pripadali Zadru, no odlukom mletačkog dužda iz 1324. godine dosuđeni su Šibeniku.
