Recovery of male DNA acquired from carrion‐feeding insects in a simulated sexual assault scenario

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract When bodies of sexual assault victims are discovered in advanced stages of decomposition, the recovery of direct DNA evidence is often compromised, posing a challenge in criminal investigations. This study aimed to determine insect colonization and succession patterns on pig carcasses inoculated with semen and to assess the feasibility of ...

A low cost scheme for high precision dual-wavelength laser metrology

open access: yes, 2013
A novel method capable of delivering relative optical path length metrology with nanometer precision is demonstrated. Unlike conventional dual-wavelength metrology which employs heterodyne detection, the method developed in this work utilizes direct ...

Mepolizumab improves clinical outcomes in patients with severe asthma and comorbid conditions

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2021
Background Comorbidities can complicate the management of severe asthma; therefore, the presence of comorbid conditions or traits often need to be considered when considering treatment options for patients with severe asthma.

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

Invasive and developmental processes of Entomophthora muscae infecting houseflies (Musca domestica)

open access: yesTransactions of the British Mycological Society, 1983
Germ-tubes of Entomophthora muscae penetrate any part of the cuticle of Musca domestica, but most frequently that of the abdomen, at or very near the point where the conidium adheres. A triradiate fissure is produced in the surface of the cuticle where the germ-tube enters, and penetration proceeds by enzymic and mechanical means, causing local ...

Alternative Protein Sources in Poultry and Pig Nutrition—A Review

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Proteins are an essential nutrient for the viability of all animals, enabling organisms to grow, regenerate and defend themselves against pathogenic organisms. Soybean and soybean‐based materials are commonly used to supplement protein in animal nutrition.

Interaction Between Visual and Phonotactic Orientation During Flight in \u3ci\u3eMagicicada Cassini\u3c/i\u3e (Homoptera: Cicadidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Visual and phonotactic orientation often occur simultaneously in diurnal cicadas. and these animals generally have their largest sensory elaboration in eyes and hearing organs. Phonotactic orientation occurs principally during flight.

Full‐length coding sequence analysis of the voltage‐gated sodium channel and acetylcholinesterase genes reveals target‐site mutations and acetylcholinesterase gene duplication in housefly (Musca domestica) populations in Japanese livestock barns

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
We simultaneously analysed insecticide resistance mutations in VGSC and AChE using NGS and hybridization probe capture in houseflies collected from livestock facilities for the first time. Resistance mutations in both VGSC and AChE were detected in most wild populations, suggesting widespread distribution of resistance genes.

Present and future potential of plant-derived products to control arthropods of veterinary and medical significance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The use of synthetic pesticides and repellents to target pests of veterinary and medical significance is becoming increasingly problematic. One alternative approach employs the bioactive attributes of plant-derived products (PDPs). These are particularly
