The invasive parasitic fly, Philornis downsi (Muscidae), is one of the greatest threats to the avifauna of the Galapagos Islands. The larvae of this fly feed on the blood and tissues of developing nestlings of at least 18 endemic and native birds.

Muscidae This worldwide family of calyptrate flies contains almost 5,300 species (Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1848b, 1850 c, 1856, 1862d, 1863, 1866a, 1868a, 1871a, 1873e, 1875 c, 1877c) described 91 nominal species (44 in Rondani, 1866a alone): 82 Palaearctic, four Afrotropical, three Neotropical and two Oriental species.
