Spontaneous waves in muscle fibres [PDF]

open access: yesS. Gunther and K. Kruse, Spontaneous waves in muscle fibres. New J. Phys., 9, 417 (2007), 2009
Mechanical oscillations are important for many cellular processes, e.g. the beating of cilia and flagella or the sensation of sound by hair cells. These dynamic states originate from spontaneous oscillations of molecular motors. A particularly clear example of such oscillations has been observed in muscle fibers under non-physiological conditions.

The small GTPase Rac1 is required for smooth muscle contraction

open access: yesJournal of Physiology, 2014
The role of the small G‐protein Rac1 was investigated in smooth muscle, using a smooth muscle‐specific knockout mouse and pharmacological blockers. Inhibition of the interaction between Rac1 and upstream regulators inhibited the α‐receptor contractions ...

Risk analysis of the Unity 1.5T MR‐Linac adapt‐to‐shape workflow

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Purpose The adapt‐to‐shape (ATS) workflow on the Unity MR‐Linac (Elekta AB, Stockholm, Sweden) allows for full replanning including recontouring and reoptimization5. Additional complexity to this workflow is added when the adaptation involves the use of MIM Maestro (MIM Software, Cleveland, OH) software in conjunction with ...

Dystrophin protects the sarcolemma from stresses developed during muscle contraction.

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 1993
The protein dystrophin, normally found on the cytoplasmic surface of skeletal muscle cell membranes, is absent in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy as well as mdx (X-linked muscular dystrophy) mice.

Scaling functional patterns of skeletal and cardiac muscles: New non-linear elasticity approach [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2009
Responding mechanically to environmental requests, muscles show a surprisingly large variety of functions. The studies of in vivo cycling muscles qualified skeletal muscles into four principal locomotor patterns: motor, brake, strut, and spring.

Expertise-Related Differences in Wrist Muscle Co-contraction in Drummers

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2020
Background and Aim: Drumming requires excellent motor control and temporal coordination. Deploying specific muscle activation patterns may help achieve these requirements.

Combining Bioimpedance and EMG Measurements for Reliable Muscle Contraction Detection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Objective: Muscle contractions are commonly detected by performing EMG measurements. The major disadvantage of this technique is that mechanical disturbances to the electrodes are in the same frequency and magnitude range as the desired signal. In this work we propose an approach and a realized measurement system to combine EMG and bioimpedance ...

Role of the Adapter Protein Abi1 in Actin-associated Signaling and Smooth Muscle Contraction*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2013
Background: Neuronal Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP) regulates smooth muscle contraction by affecting actin polymerization. Results: Abi1 activated by c-Abl regulates N-WASP and smooth muscle contraction, and reciprocally controls c-Abl ...

High‐Throughput Immunoassays for Cavin‐4 IgG: A Diagnostic Tool for Immune‐Mediated Rippling Muscle Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACTCavin‐4 was identified as a potential autoantigen for immune‐mediated rippling muscle disease (iRMD). To validate this, we developed and tested various immunoassays, including a cell‐based assay (CBA), cavin‐4 recombinant protein ELISA, and multi‐peptide ELISA. Among 19 iRMD patients, all exhibited muscle rippling, and 13 had percussion‐induced

Concentric and eccentric: muscle contraction or exercise?

open access: yesJournal of ultrasound in medicine, 2013
Dear Editor-in-chief This inclusion considers the use and possible misuse of the terms ''Concentric and Eccentric'' in three possible contexts: first, the origin of terms; second, different approaches; and third, the possible uses.
