An Anterior Cingulate Cortex‐Anterior Insular Cortex Glutamatergic Circuit Gates Stress‐Induced Visceral Hypersensitivity and Anxiety via Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors Trafficking

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies an anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) to anterior insular cortex (AIC) glutamatergic (Glu) circuit that gates stress induced visceral hypersensitivity and anxiety. Circuit activation induces both phenotypes, whereas inhibition relieves them.

Matrix Stiffness Induces Endothelial Network Senescence

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using a 3D human in vitro model that decouples mechanical stress from inflammatory or biochemical signals, matrix stiffening induces a senescence phenotype in endothelial networks. This mechano‐induced senescence activates Notch signaling, and pharmacologic Notch inhibition attenuates this stiffness‐induced senescence.

Single‐Cell and Spatial Transcriptomics Unveil Key Regulators Governing Cell Differentiation for Schistosoma japonicum Sexual Development

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using single‐cell and spatial transcriptomics, we identified key regulators that govern cell differentiation involved in parasite development and egg laying in Schistosoma japonicum. This comprehensive study establishes a foundational resource for understanding schistosome biology, deciphers the regulatory programs underlying cell differentiation and ...

A Hydrogen Sulfide–Releasing Dynamic Hydrogel Modulates Coordinated Neurovascular, Immune, and Angiogenic Responses for Scar‐Suppressed Diabetic Wound Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ROS‐Responsive H2S Hydrogel (HAPPF) Coordinated Regeneration for High‐Quality Diabetic Wound Repair.A self‐regulating dynamic hydrogel is developed to deliver a fluorogenic H2S donor in response to excessive ROS. Released H2S acts as a master regulator to resolve chronic inflammation (M2 polarization), restore VEGF‐driven angiogenesis, and rebalance ...

Muscle type and fiber type specificity in muscle wasting

International Journal of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, 2013
Muscle wasting occurs in a variety of conditions, including both genetic diseases, such as muscular dystrophies, and acquired disorders, ranging from muscle disuse to cancer cachexia, from heart failure to aging sarcopenia. In most of these conditions, the loss of muscle tissue is not homogeneous, but involves specific muscle groups, for example ...

Muscle fiber types and function

Current Opinion in Rheumatology, 1993
In this review, we address current concepts and recent experimental results that relate to heterogeneity in the physiologic, biochemical, and morphologic properties of mammalian skeletal muscle fibers. Recent data reinforce some of these current concepts while questioning others.

Fiber Typing in Aging Muscle

Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews, 2014
It is accepted widely that fast-twitch muscle fibers are preferentially impacted in aging muscle, yet we hypothesize that this is not valid when aging muscle atrophy becomes severe. In this review, we summarize the evidence of fiber type-specific effect in aging muscle and the potential confounding roles of fibers coexpressing multiple myosin heavy ...

Muscle Strength and Fiber Typing

Clinics in Sports Medicine, 1984
The authors discuss fiber typing and morphologic changes resulting from training and how these affect athletic performance. Also considered is the concept of strength, its measurement and development, and how strength affects athletic performance, activity, and injury.

Types of muscle fibers in the extraocular muscles of birds

Experimental Eye Research, 1972
Abstract Eye muscles of the quail, pigeon, sparrow and canary were examined histologically to see if their fibers are differentiated into two or more types, as has been described for mammals. In each oblique and rectus muscle examined, an area along the orbital border was found to be occupied by fibers of small cross-sectional area, and a more ...
