Advances in research on the prenatal development of skeletal muscle in animals in relation to the quality of muscle-based food. II -Genetic factors related to animal performance and advances in methodology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Selective breeding is an effective tool to improve livestock. Several selection experiments have been conducted to study direct selection responses as well as correlated responses in traits of skeletal muscle growth and function. Moreover, comparisons of

Fuel selection, muscle fibre [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Nutrition Society, 1995
The fuel selection of muscle fibres at rest is dependent on substrate availability. Increased lipid availability results in an increase citrate concentration with inhibition of glycolysis. Fat utilization also increases the concentration ratio acetyl-CoA:CoASH, with inhibition of PDH transformation to the active form.

THE CAPILLARY PATTERN IN HUMAN MASSETER MUSCLE DURING AGEING

open access: yesImage Analysis and Stereology, 2013
The effect of ageing on the capillary network in skeletal muscles has produced conflicting results in both, human and animals studies. Some of the inconsistencies are due to non-comparable and biased methods that were applied on thin transversal sections,

Muscle fibre types in the suprahyoid muscles of the rat [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, 2001
Five muscle fibre types (I, IIc, IIa, IIx and IIb) were found in the suprahyoid muscles (mylohyoid, geniohyoid, and the anterior and posterior bellies of the digastric) of the rat using immuno and enzyme histochemical techniques. More than 90% of fibres in the muscles examined were fast contracting fibres (types IIa, IIx and IIb).

Porcine congenital splayleg is characterised by muscle fibre atrophy associated with relative rise in MAFbx and fall in P311 expression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
<p>Background: Porcine congenital splayleg (PCS) is the most important congenital condition of piglets, associated with lameness and immobility, of unknown aetiology and pathogenesis, hence the need to better understand the condition by defining ...

Breed-related number and size of muscle fibres and their response to carcass quality in chickens

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2015
The present study was aimed to investigate the number and size of muscle fibre and their relation to carcass quality traits in chickens (slow- and fast-growing chicken strains).

Advances in research on the prenatal development of skeletal muscle in animals in relation to the quality of muscle-based food. I - Regulation of myogenesis and environmental impact [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Skeletal muscle development in vertebrates – also termed myogenesis – is a highly integrated process. Evidence to date indicates that the processes are very similar across mammals, poultry and fish, although the timings of the various steps differ ...

Muscle growth and flesh quality of farmed Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) in relation to season of harvest [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In the present study, muscle growth and flesh quality have been investigated from both commercially farmed Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) (Aga marine AS, Norway)and halibut obtained from small-scale trials at Mørkvedbukta Research Station ...

Scaling of Muscle Fibres and Locomotion [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 1992
ABSTRACT To reconcile the scaling of the mechanics and energetics of locomotion to recent data on the scaling of the mechanics of muscle fibres, I have extended the theory of Taylor and colleagues that the energetic cost of locomotion is determined by the cost of generating force by the fibres. By assuming (1) that the cost of generating

Morphological, histochemical, and interstitial pressure changes in the tibialis anterior muscle before and after aortofemoral bypass in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2002
Background Morphological and electrophysiological studies of ischemic muscles in peripheral arterial disease disclosed evidence of denervation and fibre atrophy.
