Serotonin-Induced Muscle Weakness
Archives of Neurology, 1974Infusions of serotonin into a rat nervemuscle preparation decreased the force of the evoked twitch of anterior tibial and soleus muscles. Antiserotonin drugs (cyproheptadine hydrochloride, methysergide, chlorpromazine hydrochloride) prevented the adverse effect of serotonin if they were given prior to the serotonin infusion.

Even if the muscle impairment secondary to hypovitaminosis D has been known since the seventeenth century in children affected by rickets, we had to wait for the discovery of the presence of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in the human skeletal muscle cells to witness a remarkable growth of knowledge concerning the action of vitamin D on muscle.

A 31-year old cook suffered from episodes with muscular weakness since 3 weeks. These episodes resolved, at times, spontaneously and completely after a few hours. The weakness affected mainly the muscles of trunk and proximal extremities. Investigation of the patient revealed flaccid tetraparesis with diminished tendon reflexes, however, cranial ...

Tick Paralysis Without Muscle Weakness
Archives of Neurology, 1969TICK PARALYSIS, a disease of man and animals, has been recognized as a clinical entity since the beginning of the 19th century. Captain William Hovell, while traveling through Australia, wrote in 1824 of "the small insect called the tick, which buries itself in the flesh, and would in the end destroy either man or beast if not removed in time." 1 Todd ...

Proximal muscle weakness in children
Postgraduate Medicine, 1981In as many as half of the children referred to a muscle disease clinic, the original diagnosis is ultimately changed. Five cases histories are reviewed here in which Duchenne muscular dystrophy had been mistakenly diagnosed 3 to 12 years previously and the correct diagnosis was made only after repeat muscle biopsy or biopsy review.

Adolescent Onset of Muscle Weakness
Medical Clinics of North AmericaPediatric adolescent muscle weakness can be from a variety of causes. Methodical diagnostic evaluation can lead to the category of diseases whereby phenotypic overlap requires either specialized care or broad testing patterns. However, having the ultimate diagnosis is important for prognostication.
