Living Low and Dry: Costs of and Resilience to Soil Hydric Stress in a Fossorial Amphisbaenian Reptile

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Soil drought imposes moderate, temporary costs on a strictly fossorial amphisbaenian reptile. However, these animals seem to cope with, at least, moderately short droughts thanks to their peculiar adaptations to living in an underground environment. ABSTRACT The physiological traits of animals can be strongly influenced by climatic fluctuations, and ...

Museo e Sistema

open access: yesStudi di estetica : 45, 1, 2012, 2012
The evolution of the modern museum runs parallel to the history of the system of the fine arts. The dissolution of the system in XX century coincides with a serious reflection on the status of the museum. The hypothesis presented in this paper is that the contemporary organisations of the museum can capture the features of a common sense on the arts, a

Sensory Biology of the Franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei, Pontoporiidae, Cetartiodactyla): Ontogenetic Modifications of Vibrissae and Vibrissal Crypts

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
The transition of cetaceans from a terrestrial to an aquatic environment involved a crucial sensory adaptation to environments with limited visibility. Vibrissae, important mechanoreceptors, undergo an ontogenetic transformation in odontocetes. This research describes the histomorphology of vibrissae and crypts at different developmental stages ...

The Wonder Years: A Demographic Approach to Revisit the Age‐at‐Size Conundrum in Amphibians

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We combined repeated body size measurements of marked individuals of unknown age throughout their adult life with growth records of individuals marked as postmetamorphic juveniles and recaptured years later as sexually mature adults, focusing on 10 amphibian species in central Spain.

Disentangling Multitrophic Interactions: How Vegetation Cover, Wild Boar, Deer, and Predators Shape Rodents Activity and Acorn Dispersal

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Vegetation cover promotes rodent activity and acorn dispersal, while wild boars exert a direct negative effect on mice. Conversely, deer and predators displayed no significant impact on rodent behavior. These results identify wild boars as the main disruptors of rodent‐mediated forest regeneration.

Saving Water to Survive: Alternative Water Loss Strategies Could Explain Color Polymorphism Maintenance in a Lacertid Lizard

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We demonstrate that red male Podarcis muralis exhibit higher evaporative water loss compared to other morphs, indicating a physiological strategy that prioritizes hydroregulation over fine thermoregulation. This suggests red morphs are adapted to cooler, wetter niches, while white and yellow morphs possess superior water conservation mechanisms to ...
