Osteohistological characterization of notosuchian osteoderms: Evidence for an overlying thick leathery layer of skin. [PDF]

The perpendicular insertion of Sharpey's fibers in the external cortex suggests the presence of a thick leathery skin layer overlying notosuchian osteoderms. Although intramembranous ossification is the main process involved in the development of crocodyliform osteoderms, we reported a case of metaplastic development.

We characterized the patterns of genetic and phenotypic variation in a contact zone between Cycloramphus dubius and Cycloramphus boraceiensis, two sister species of frogs endemic to the Atlantic Coastal Forest of Brazil.
