Tempo, 1980In 1948, Pierre Boulez ended one of his articles thus: ‘I have a horror of dealing in words with what is so prettily called the aesthetic problem. Besides, I don't want to make this article any longer; I prefer to turn back to my MS paper.’That attitude was to become characteristic of young avant-garde composers in the 1950's.

Beautiful Sounds, Beautiful Life: Cultivating Musical Listening through Hearing Aids in 1950s Japan
Technology and Culture, 2022Hearing aids facilitated musical listening in postwar Japan in two distinctive ways. First, hearing aid developers and their associates in deaf education used assistive technologies to play music, thus promoting a new mode of listening that in their view would enhance deaf people's lives.

On the Musically Beautiful and "Absolute Music"
2018It is a common assumption that Hanslick was the main spokesperson for "absolute music." My research shows that Hanslick did not come to be associated with the term until towards the end of the nineteenth century. Around 1880, polemics about Liszt's concept of program music used "absolute music" to designate program music's opposite.

The Beautiful Music All Around Us
2012This book presents the rich backstories of thirteen performances captured on Library of Congress field recordings between 1934 and 1942 in locations reaching from Southern Appalachia to the Mississippi Delta and the Great Plains. These performances were recorded in kitchens and churches, on porches and in prisons, in hotel rooms and school auditoriums.
