In 1948, Pierre Boulez ended one of his articles thus: ‘I have a horror of dealing in words with what is so prettily called the aesthetic problem. Besides, I don't want to make this article any longer; I prefer to turn back to my MS paper.’That attitude was to become characteristic of young avant-garde composers in the 1950's.

Beautiful Sounds, Beautiful Life: Cultivating Musical Listening through Hearing Aids in 1950s Japan

Hearing aids facilitated musical listening in postwar Japan in two distinctive ways. First, hearing aid developers and their associates in deaf education used assistive technologies to play music, thus promoting a new mode of listening that in their view would enhance deaf people's lives.

It is a common assumption that Hanslick was the main spokesperson for "absolute music." My research shows that Hanslick did not come to be associated with the term until towards the end of the nineteenth century. Around 1880, polemics about Liszt's concept of program music used "absolute music" to designate program music's opposite.
