Musician's dystonia is a task-specific dystonia that usually affects the embouchure or the most active digits of the most active hand, and therefore differs between instruments. Since it is usually painless and intermittent, the diagnosis is often delayed and it is commonly misdiagnosed as being an overuse disorder or tendon pathology.

Lexical tone perception in musicians and non-musicians

Neuropsychologia, 1995In two experiments, one with instrumental and one with synthesized tunes, 20 musicians and 20 non-musicians were requested to identify popular melodies presented dichotically. When the tempo of the melodies is fast enough to render their identification difficult, a right-ear advantage appears in the former group and a left-ear advantage in the latter ...

Non-musicians’ and musicians’ perception of bitonality
Psychology of Music, 2010Bitonal music is characterized by a certain, dissonant effect that had been believed to be clearly audible by everyone. Cognitive Abilities of Musicians
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2011Playing music may involve different cognitive domains, but previous studies of musicians and patients with brain lesions have reported inconsistent associations between music performances and other cognitive functions. Fine musical performance may be associated with high executive and control functions.
