Dynamics and thermodynamics of the fast and slow Madden–Julian Oscillation
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.The results of this study highlight the MJO as a complex phenomenon, the behavior of which is driven by an interplay of thermodynamic and dynamic processes. The MJO's distinct speeds are controlled by different mechanisms: slow MJOs propagate eastward primarily via horizontal moisture advection, fast MJOs by vertical moisture advection.
