Dynamics and thermodynamics of the fast and slow Madden–Julian Oscillation

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The results of this study highlight the MJO as a complex phenomenon, the behavior of which is driven by an interplay of thermodynamic and dynamic processes. The MJO's distinct speeds are controlled by different mechanisms: slow MJOs propagate eastward primarily via horizontal moisture advection, fast MJOs by vertical moisture advection.

Presence of Nationally Banned Carbamates and Organophosphate Pesticides in Wild Carnivores, Southeastern Brazil

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As top predators, terrestrial carnivores face great risk of pesticide exposure and serve as sentinels of environmental contamination. Additionally, terrestrial carnivores are frequently threatened by intentional or secondary poisoning with highly toxic compounds, such as carbamates and organophosphates.

SHIV-162P3 infection of rhesus macaques given maraviroc gel vaginally does not involve resistant viruses. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Maraviroc (MVC) gels are effective at protecting rhesus macaques from vaginal SHIV transmission, but breakthrough infections can occur. To determine the effects of a vaginal MVC gel on infecting SHIV populations in a macaque model, we analyzed plasma ...

Impacts to the mountain‐valley circulation from the 2023 annular solar eclipse

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
In October 2023, as part of the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project (NEBP), faculty and students from the University of North Dakota (UND) in coordination with Pueblo Community College Southwest collected weather observations during an annular solar eclipse colloquially known as a ‘ring of fire’ eclipse.

LncRNA LYPLAL1, miR-204-5p, and SIRT1: novel signatures for risk assessment of diabetic macrovascular complications

open access: yesScientific Reports
Long-term, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus can lead to micro- and macrovascular problems. The protective function of lncRNA LYPLAL1 is to reduce endothelium cell inflammation by upregulating sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and reducing microRNA (miR)-204-5p.

Comparative trend analysis of gunshot injuries and motor vehicle crashes at the KATH Emergency Department

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2013
Motor vehicle crashes are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Injuries resulting from fire arms were the second leading cause of death in the US in 2003. In Ghana, motor vehicle crashes (MVC) are a common cause of injury and

Mortality From Rural Traumatic Brain Injury Are Underestimated Without Inclusion of Prehospital Deaths

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Rural residents are more likely to suffer moderate and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and experience delay to definitive care than urban patients. Prior studies comparing these populations were based on hospitalised patients only. We examined TBI outcomes incorporating pre‐hospital mortality to determine the association between

Survival outcomes and treatment patterns in myelofibrosis in the JAK inhibitor era

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Summary Data on real‐world survival and treatment patterns in large, unselected myelofibrosis (MF) cohorts remain limited. We analysed 1649 patients with MF diagnosed from 2010 onwards and included in the Spanish Myelofibrosis Registry across 64 centres. Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors were administered to approximately half of the patients.

Role of maraviroc and/or rapamycin in the liver of IL10 KO mice with frailty syndrome.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
Cellular senescence and low-grade inflammation favor the acceleration of aging. The liver is an essential metabolic organ because changes related to its function are related to age-related diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects
