CONGENITAL MYCOPLASMA PNEUMONIAE PNEUMONIA IN A NEONATE

A fatal case of vertical transmission of Mycoplasma pneumoniae manifesting as congenital pneumonia in a neonate is presented. The diagnosis was based on the detection of DNA by polymerase chain reaction on the neonatal nasopharyngeal aspirates and placenta and rising titers of maternal anti Mycoplasma antibodies by complement fixation test.

A cultural and serologic study of primary atypical pneumonia (PAP) was done prospectively in 239 randomly chosen recruit admissions to the US Naval Hospital, Great Lakes, III. Cold-agglutinin reactive sera were found in 172 patients, while evidence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Eaton agent) infection was detected in 41.
