How mushrooms tend to break through the evolutionary dead end

open access: yesEcocycles, 2018
Genes, genetics, genomics, and the roles of mushrooms and toadstools in the global carbon cycle (GCC) are reviewed here. The literature survey is a tribute to the contributions made by Hungary and Hungarian scientists to fungi and mushroom research ...

Enhancement of conservation knowledge through increased access to botanical information

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 33, Issue 3, Page 523-533, June 2019., 2019
Abstract Herbarium specimens are increasingly recognized as an important resource for conservation science and virtual herbaria are making specimens freely available to a wider range of users than ever before. Few virtual herbaria are designed with conservation use as a primary driver. Exceptionally, Brazil's Reflora Virtual Herbarium (RVH) was created

Potential of Mushroom Compounds as Immunomodulators in Cancer Immunotherapy: A Review

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2018, Issue 1, 2018., 2018
Since time immemorial, plants and their compounds have been used in the treatment and management of various ailments. Currently, most of conventional drugs used for treatment of diseases are either directly or indirectly obtained from plant sources. The fungal group of plants is of significance, which not only provides food directly to man but also has

Not Extremely Plastic: Testing the Limits of Morphological Plasticity in Fungal Mycelia in Response to Soil Grazers

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 12, December 2025.
Using image analysis to track the development of fungal networks in the presence of predators, we found that even in modular organisms, plasticity is more nuanced and limited than previously assumed. Our results challenge the long‐held notion that a modular body plan necessarily confers extreme plasticity.

White collar 1‐induced photolyase expression contributes to UV‐tolerance of Ustilago maydis

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 5, Issue 2, Page 224-243, April 2016., 2016
We show in this contribution that the phytopathogenic fungus Ustilago maydis responds to blue light under control of white collar 1 (Wco1). Among the blue light‐induced genes are the photolyase DNA repair enzymes. The Δwco1 mutant is less tolerant against UV‐B consistent with lack of photolyase induction in the mutant.

New Species and New Record of Genus Chrysothrix (Chrysotrichaceae, Arthoniales) from South Korea and Chile

open access: yesMycobiology, 2018
The genus Chrysothrix is very common around the world and easy to be recognized by its bright yellowish granular thallus. In this study, investigations of lichen mycota in South Korea and Chile from 2010 to 2017 have been done, and some Chrysothrix ...

Population Persistence and Soil Microbial Communities of a Serpentine Endemic Plant Outside Its Historic Elevation Range

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2025.
Here we report on a long‐term transplant study of a serpentine endemic plant where individuals were transplanted into areas of climatic refugia in locations outside of its current range. Of the 15 initial transplant sites, one site had surviving individuals with reproductive success and four sites had surviving individuals with no reproductive success ...
