Splenectomy in myeloid metaplasia [PDF]

open access: yesBlood, 1979
Abstract Between 1960 and 1977, 50 patients with agnogenic myeloid metaplasia were splenectomized. Twenty-five of 26 patients with painful splenomegaly, 4 of 9 patients with refractory hemolytic anemia, 4 of 10 patients with refractory thrombocytopenia, and 4 of 4 patients with portal hypertension showed significant benefit from the ...

Insights into PI3K/AKT signaling in B cell development and chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Review explores how the phosphoinositide 3‐kinase and protein kinase B pathway shapes B cell development and drives chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a common blood cancer. It examines how signaling levels affect disease progression, addresses treatment challenges, and introduces novel experimental strategies to improve therapies and patient outcomes.

MyD88-dependent interplay between myeloid and endothelial cells in the initiation and progression of obesity-associated inflammatory diseases. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Low-grade systemic inflammation is often associated with metabolic syndrome, which plays a critical role in the development of the obesity-associated inflammatory diseases, including insulin resistance and atherosclerosis.

Ablation of LRP6 in alpha‐smooth muscle actin‐expressing cells abrogates lung inflammation and fibrosis upon bleomycin‐induced lung injury

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

A model for the functional assessment of elderly with myeloid neoplasms

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia, 2015
Objective: Myeloid neoplasms are heterogeneous diseases that are more incident in the elderly. The goals of this study were to aggregate a geriatric approach to the patient assessment, to show the impact of gender, age, hemoglobin concentration and ...

VISTA: A Target to Manage the Innate Cytokine Storm

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2021
In recent years, the success of immunotherapy targeting immunoregulatory receptors (immune checkpoints) in cancer have generated enthusiastic support to target these receptors in a wide range of other immune related diseases. While the overwhelming focus

Alveolar Macrophages Isolated Directly From Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV)-Seropositive Individuals Are Sites of HCMV Reactivation In Vivo. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) causes significant morbidity in the immunocompromised host. Following primary infection, the virus establishes latent infection in progenitor cells of the myeloid lineage.

Radiation-induced myeloid leukemia in murine models. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The use of radiation therapy is a cornerstone of modern cancer treatment. The number of patients that undergo radiation as a part of their therapy regimen is only increasing every year, but this does not come without cost.
