Ceratomyxa (Myxozoa: Bivalvulida): Robust taxon or genus of convenience?

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology, 2009
The genus Ceratomyxa (Myxozoa: Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) contains parasites that typically infect the gall bladders of marine teleosts. Species of this genus have also been recorded from elasmobranchs, while the best known species (Ceratomyxa shasta) is a systemic pathogen of fresh water salmonid fishes. Here we characterise 10 new species of Ceratomyxa

Recent Advances in Our Knowledge of the Myxozoa

Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, 2001
ABSTRACT. In the last few years two factors have helped to significantly advance our understanding of the Myxozoa. First, the phenomenal increase in fin fish aquaculture in the 1990s has lead to the increased importance of these parasites; in turn this has lead to intensified research efforts, which have increased knowledge of the development ...

A triploblast origin for Myxozoa?

Nature, 1998
Hox genes, which play key roles in the development of body plans, have been described from a variety of metazoans1. Here we report the presence of Hox class genes that are typical of triploblasts in Myxozoa, formerly a protozoan taxon. This finding confirms Myxozoa's phylogenetic affinity with the Bilateria and reveals an extreme example of parasitic ...

Sacculogenesis of Buddenbrockia plumatellae (Myxozoa) within the invertebrate host Plumatella repens (Bryozoa) with comments on the evolutionary relationships of the Myxozoa

International Journal for Parasitology, 2007
Members of the phylum Myxozoa are obligate parasites, primarily of aquatic organisms. Their phylogeny has remained problematic, with studies placing them within either the Bilateria or Cnidaria. The discovery that the enigmatic Buddenbrockia plumatellae is a myxozoan that possesses distinct bilaterian features appeared to have finally resolved the ...

Diversity and systematics of the Malacosporea (Myxozoa)

Invertebrate Biology, 2005
Abstract. Myxozoans belonging to the recently described class Malacosporea parasitize freshwater bryozoans during at least part of their life cycle. There are at present only two species described in this class: Buddenbrockia plumatellae and Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae. The former can exist as vermiform and sac‐like stages in bryozoan hosts.

Biodiversity and Evolution of the Myxozoa

2003
Myxozoans (phylum Myxozoa) are metazoan parasites utilizing invertebrate and (mainly) aquatic vertebrate hosts. They have in common with cnidarians the possession of virtually identical, highly complex organelles, namely the polar capsules in myxozoan spores, serving for attachment to new hosts and the nematocysts in surface epithelia of cnidarians ...
